Hi, Im new to 40k and am very excited to play eldar. I am looking to make a list of around 1000 to 1500 points (preferably the latter) but have been having trouble coming up with a list. I have looked at a lot of the threads on this site but they all seem to be going for a more competitive list. I would some day like to be at least semi competitive, but being that I have yet to even play a real game and am for now just playing with friends, Im just trying to make one that is fun but can also do something. A lot of people seem to be going mech, but Im not sure that Im ready strategically or monetarily for dealing with a list like that. Does anyone have any advice? Im not asking for anyone to make a list for me or anything but Im really grasping at thin air here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
i would pick up a nightspinner as it is really fun and a very effective tank, mabye a wraithlord and a few war walkers for HS. for troops i would go with dire avengers in waveserpents mabye a few squads and then some banshees or scorpions mabye the avater but idk tell me what kind of list you want to do tell me what units u like, dark reapers are fun to use and if you are just playing with friends then i suggest you pick them up.
Haha thanks a lot! Most of those were actually units that i was considering buying. Im glad that you said the wraithlord because i think that it is the coolest model in the game. I had been thinking the DAs in wave serpent and probably banshees and some warwalkers. I would like to try the nightspinner too. Mostly i will be playing against tau and tyranid if that is any help. Kinda sucks because the are sort of opposites.

I'd advise 2 Fire Prisms for tons of variable destructiveness. I'd advise, against those enemies, a list that looks something like this:
Fire Dragon, 5 man, w/ Wave Serpent
Striking Scorpions, 10 man, Exarch w/ Biting Blade, possibly a Wave Serpent
2x Dire Avenger squads, Wave Serpents
2x Fire Prisms
Wraithlord or a Night Spinner
I'd put EMLs on all of your Wave Serpents, btw.
EDIT: Howling Banshees are still one of our scariest units, and should probably make it into a list. Their low-strength-but-power-weapon makes them excellent against MEQs and TEQs, and sometimes even against MCs.

Terminator armor going critical would be like Three Mile Island only very, VERY angry, and carrying a hammer.
LO rules in a nutshell: Don't post unit costs, be polite, rep posts containing of win.
I'd start with the army box from a discount online seller.
10 Guardians with a support weapon is a reasonable starter troop, although if you get more competitive won't see much use.
The Dire Avengers can go in the Wave Serpent, and is your second troop choice, although it only will number 5.
Then you have a war walker, which are a good cheap HS choice, that generally lacks use due to fire prisms being quite good.
If you want to go mech, you could even buy two starter kits, so you get 20 guardians, 2 Wave Serpents, 10 Dire Avengers and 2 War Walkers.
If you buy some DA heads off ebay you could probably call them all DA (despite shuriken cata's not having the extended barrel or sight)
You can also look at the jetbike approach, seer council or just normal jetbikes are reasonable.
Even the most 'competitive' eldar lists generally involve alot more maneuvering than killing, which you might find rather... boring.
i am in the same boat as you, as i have just started a new army of Eldar. at the moment, i have 2x Dire Avenger Squads (both Exarchs have 2x Catapults & BladeStorm, Hordes beware!), and a Farseer With Guide & Doom and 3 Warlocks, i have recently bought a Squad of Striking Scorpions (SS) and am arming the Exarch with a Biting Blade
definetly use a farseer as your hq. especially if your usuing a Wraithlord. wraith sight has upset me many times ha. but like other people said DA are awsome for troops. yriel is a great low point hq if you dont want a farseer. so is an av atvatar. night spinners are great fun. and war walkers with scatter lasers are sure to make your marine playing friends cry
A moment of weakness spawns a life tme of heresy...
Wave serpents, buy a good number of wave serpents, unless of course your going to do a foot slogging eldar force in which case make sure you buy the Avatar for the fearless factor. Just about your entire army can be put into a Wave serpent and my friends hate the fact that to attack on of my squads they have to pop open a tank first! Lol, love it!
Currently playing a campaign against my friends and I'm using a list with 9 wave serpents. In Kill point games they get very very fustrated! lol.
Well before I can give you awesome eldar advice, you need to decide if you want to go fluffy or non-fluffy. THEN decide if you want to go Mech or Hybrid (mech and foot), or super hybrid ( all infantry in tanks and only jetbikes/warp packs/wings).
Eldar -APOC- 6500 Points
Chaos Daemons -Fate Crusher- 3500 Points
Grey knights - 1000 Points
Well, while I think Eldar lore is really awesome, but I want to do my own thing and have a color scheme that I'm fond of. I also gave it some thought and having waveserpents tear-assing around the battlefield is too cool to pass up so I'm planning on going mech.
P.S. All you guys have been really helpful and I really appreciate all the great advice
