I have a friend who has begun playing an eldar army. At around 1000 pts he fields 2 war walkers and a grav tank. He also has some jet bikes he will start using.
I have been thinking about taking some big guns (kannons) to fire at his walkers and tank. This would also draw the fire away from my trucks as well. I don't hear to much chatter about big guns. They are fairly cheap points wise and i was wondering by people dont seem to use them.
killa kans are more than twice the points when mounted with rokkits so i feel like the aren't worth the points when i could get kannons to do the same job. I want to take down his tanks and walkers in the first few turns so dont really want to wait to charge in walkers or CC units
i do include 3 def coptas in my list for menacing his tanks but that doesnt seem to be enough to take down all his lightly armoured craft.
Also, the models for the big guns look horribly out dated. anyone else feel that way?
I agree, the models are pretty weak. I converted my own from some cannon toys i found that look a lot better.
The fact is, kannons are pretty decent for their points, but they compete with all the tanks and walkers that people love to take. They also don't work as well in a mechanized list, because the fight often outranges them. (mostly in spearhead deployment) If you know the eldar player is going to come to you, you'll probably get a chance to use them, but you'll have to be careful how you deploy them or they'll be easy pickins for the outflanking war walkers. I think they'd work well in a gunline list with lootas and such. In an assault list (most ork lists) the rest of your army just kind of leaves them behind.

what do others do in a situation like this? just march in and take the casualties on their higher cost units and vechicles since they will be in CC in two rounds anyways?
i dont see the point of the killa kans since they have lower WS and wont be very effective at their point cost. all of the other vehicles have a lower BS and are then less effective.
i don't play against eldar much, but in a situation like that I might leave a squad of trukk boyz on foot (or on an objective) and give a trukk to a handful of tankbustas. You also might be interested in the long-range autohit S10 AP2 melta gun that the wierdboy rolls 1/6 of the time. If you buy him the warphead reroll you've got a pretty fair chance of getting at least one melta shot. It's unreliable, but it's the strongest single shooting attack the orks have.
What's your list like?
(edit: sorry, ap2. it's almost as good.)

Grax likes his kannons. They're good for multiple reasons:
-They're dual-purpose. You've got an anti-armor mode and an anti-infantry mode. They're not overwhelming in either, but orks don't have a Really Decent Anti-Tank Option; kannons are as good as anything else you've got.
-They're cheap. Most opponents don't fear your grots; they definitely aren't going to draw the kind of oh-my-god-kill-it-KILL-IT firepower that your lootas will. Positioned correctly, it's entirely possible that your kannons could kill nothing and still earn their points back, just by taking an expensive enemy unit far enough away from the rest of the fight that they can't affect the outcome.
-That BS3 is more reliable than most of the things you can have out on the board.
-Unlike kans, kannons are lousy targets for anti-tank weapons. In an Ork list without a lot of vehicles, the vehicles you do have are going to catch a lot of anti-tank fire. A kan is a great target for a lascannon; firing on your kannons means some 3-point grot will get overkilled.
I don't have any myself, and it's -definitely- because the model is poo. I've heard some people mention converting them out of Imperial heavy weapon teams. I figure you could also take the spare kannon off a battlewagon with deffrolla and convert that up...
I relooked at the assaulting vehicle rules again and realized the kan WS doesn't matter against vehicles. I am guessing that the WS is used against walkers since the rules say that they fight like infantry models.
That gives the kans a bit more versatility but I still don't think they are really worth their points yet. Against other walkers and infantry they are crippled in CC.
