For around 100 points looking at what long range weapons are available, choices:
7 Lootas 105 points
2 Big Guns (Kannons) 40
2 Big Guns (zapgunz) 60
Big Mek 35
+Shock Attack Gun 60
+ cyborg 10
+ Eavy Armor 5
views , thoughts and suggestions please,
If 100 points is all you have, then I'd go with big gunz kannons. The other big gunz are nowhere as good. Some ammo runts would also be nice, if you have them. They're a great cheap and shooty unit.
Lootas are fantastic, but I wouldn't use less than 9 in a unit. In fact, I feel that 9-10 is the only way to use them. Less and they won't last. More and they'll draw too much fire. If you don't have the points for 9, then don't use them.
The SAG is a lot of random fun, but they're a little too random to really be competitive. In other words, only use it if you really like the unit, or you're in a situation where the payoff for using them outweighs the risk, like in Apocalypse games.

I say yea,
I absolutely, love, Lootas.
even if you dont use them shooting, you can use them in psych tactics: keep them in cover, but in a way that they are able to shoot any turn. that way your opponent needs to keep his attention on them. And if he forgets that, you can remind him by using their dakka.
thx for post
Looking around 150 points but went with 100 for comparing with big mek option.
have you though about using something more mobile like defkoptas with tl rokkits?
I tend to lean more toward a looted wagon with a Boom Gun. Alright range, just over 100pts and it almost always hits something. Haven't had a lot of luck with the lootas yet, I guess they're just to soft for me. That said, I always have a Big Mek with his infamous Shokk attack gun. Loads of fun! That is why we play isn't it?
You can also run loota's in a 5 person unit. That way you could run 2x 5 loota groups, to provide fire against two targets each round. Of course they'll break and run really fast if they start getting targeted, but it's less likely they'll both be shot at in the same turn. Just another alternate suggestion.
I've also seen some individuals put a bug of mek's with big shoota's in with the loota's, so when the group moves to a new firebase location, it can still fire at 36 inches with a bit of firepower. Lots of tactics to use with those guys.
I personally used them successfully for the first time my last game (ran a group of 10 ), they were responsible for an absurd amount of kills (basically wiped out 3 entire squads single handedly).
