Welcome to Librarium Online!
My friend that I regularly play against plays only one army. Blood Angels.
Between his storm shield terminators and poxy Feel no Pain for most of his army, I find that I regularly get thrashed whenever I bring my Tau to the tabletop. Anyone got any suggestions on how to even the odds a bit or special tactics/units that they found particularly effective?
You should be fielding as many crisis suits as posible with the fireknife setup. That should be more than enough to shut him down.
thanks for the insight with the fireknives, my other problem is that he has recently been using tech marines attached to devistator squads to get a 2+ cover save in buildings. this coupled with FNP makes it a really tough nut to crack. Any suggestions on how to tackle this or is staying out of range the bst policy?
If he's in a building, you can't shoot at the models - you have to target the building (it's treated as an immobilised vehicle basically), if he's in ruins then he starts with a 4+ cover save and can only improve it to 3+ with one techmarine. If he chooses to spend 100 points on two techmarines just to give his devs a 2+ cover, then make sure you stay out of their LOS and ignore them
oh wow, i wasn't aware that you couldn't target units in buildings. Thanks for the info. Does this also apply to units on top of buildings as well for example towers etc? Destroying a building is the same as destroying a vehicle then? Does this give the same rules for the units inside, with a leadership save for pinning etc?
Firstly a techmarine doesn't need to be anywhere near a bolstered pieces of terrain or the unit using it. You pick a ruin (and it has to be a ruin - not a wall or forest or crashed ship) in the deployment zone before the game starts and that gets the bonus for the whole game.
Secondly you can't bolster something more than once and generally only fortifications grant a starting 3+ save. Unless his units are going to ground (and therefore not moving or shooting) he shouldn't be getting 2+.
As for targetting buildings - yes they are much the same as vehicles. Techmarines have no effect on them and they are typically AV12 on all facings. Check the rules on page 79.
Note than you can shoot units inside buildings using template weapons (D6 automatic hits if a template touches at least one firing point).
Units standing on parapets and battlements are still treated as 'inside' the building and can't be targetted, but you do add +1 to all damage rolls against the building if anyone is in the open like this. A lot of players put models on top of a building to indicate occupancy though so make sure you are clear with your opponent.
Ruins are just scenery, you don't occupy them as such and they provide cover and targets as normal.
If he does put his devs in a building, all you have to do is shake it (with a 1-4 result on the damage table, not by picking it up ) and the models inside can't do anything except get out - and if they do that, they still can't shoot
Utilize these tactics if you really need that unit destroyed:
*Destroy buildings with Rail guns, Missile Pods, or Fusion Blasters.
*Negate cover saves from the wrekage by using pathfinder squads.
*In conjunction with above; mop up with your Fireknife squads.
i genuinly hate blood angels and therefor will be happy to give you advice. whats said above, fireknives will destroy him, but the termies will be tough to beat. the way i do it is lay into them with lots of stuff (not all of it necassarily AP2) and hope he rolls a few 1s
destroying buildings shouldnt typicly be high on the priority list, submunision rounds into his guys and solids into his tanks is where your railguns need to be pointed
