Welcome to Librarium Online!
Two points i'd like discussed here:
Firstly the relative equal point cost of the three unit types and the strengths and weaknesses inherit in them. (can't help but feel like orks for 6 points are superior)
Secondly, hormogaunts verse termagaunts. The termagaunts just don't seem to have much killing power. Give them a tergivon yes, but without one please argue me their merits.
- 1 point cheaper
- decent bs and I
- short ranged single shot gun
- good Initiative
- 2 attacks and scything talons
Yes orks attack last but their higher toughness, weapon skill, better gun/more attacks seem to make them look like the better unit. I know it's hard to compare apples to oranges especially taking a unit out of the context of its army. I just need a little morale boost about my horde army atm.
- 4 toughness, 2 base attacks, 4 weapon skill
- decent ranged 2 shot gun
Trust me gaunts are far more adaptable. Also we can SPAWN termagaunts let us not forget that. imo I prefer tryanids as the overall "horde" army because backed up with the right things those gaunts are sheer overkill.

Apples and oranges, badxample. You can't compare points costs across codexes. They're not balanced that way. Points costs are internally balanced so that once a full army list is put together at around 1500 pts - 2000 pts, the game itself is even.
Ork Boyz are 6 pts apiece because that is what is required to get a decent yet fair Ork army once you build one at around 1500 pts.
Termagants are 5 pts apiece (and hormagaunts are 6 pts apiece) because that is what is required to get a decent yet fair Tyranids army once you build one at around 1500 pts.
Trust me, Ork Boyz are not any better or worse of a deal than Tyranid 'gants/'gaunts.
As for why termagants are 5 pts and hormies are 6 pts ... that is also fair. GW kinda expects that termagants will likely be paired with a tervigon, hence the cost might "seem a little high". Hormies also should rarely be fielded naked, they should pretty much always have toxin sacs, taking their cost up to 8 pts apiece. Still cheap, but that's a significant increase in cost per model.
Termagants can shoot, and can even be upgraded with different shooting weapons. Hormies can only assault. That must also be factored into the points costs.
In the end, this is a pretty useless analysis to pursue. All that matters is your army list. You choose the units -- be they termagants, hormagaunts, or otherwise -- that your list requires in order to function well on the tabletop. Stop worrying about points costs for either your 'nids or your opponent's army. Totally irrelevant.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Comparing them directly with each other is misleading. What's more important is how they function with regards to the rest of the army.
You should check out my thread here on the synergies of an ork horde army versus a nid swarm army.
