I have just taken a long look at the phoenix lord section of the codex and found that a few of them are very interesting in some way. The one that got to my attention was karrandras. With 7 strength 9 attacks on a charge, what can't he do? The only down side to him is that he would attack last. This comes to the question, what do you think of phoenix lords? Are they worth their points? Yriel got my attention as well so I am sitting on the fence on choosing yriel or karrandras for my list. Maybe you have an answer.
As far as I've seen, the majority of the players here agree that the Phoenix Lords are all to overpriced. The only debate I've seen is with Maugen Ra because of the S6 Assault 4 rending weapon and his ability to ignore coversaves Not to mention he's the second cheapest.
As for Yriel, well he's a badass. Singing Spear that is also a power weapon? Hell yes! He's got good WS/BS/Attacks and he's 60 points cheaper than Karadras.

Warmahordes: Legion of Everblight (Absylonia)
Karandas is one of the lords that are still effective. Unfortunately most of them are overpriced and more important is very hard to make a list that would gravitate on them because of the lack of army wide special rules.

God when people going to get this one right. Karrandras is strength 8 when using his power fist and 5 with his chainsword, you only get the the bonus from the weapon when you use it.
I'd say Yriel trumps any of the Phoenix lords. He's not tough by any means, but he's soooooooo much more killy. A singing spear that ignores armor saves and his laser eye are very powerful. The only problem with him is that while he can easily skewer MCs, you need to make sure you'll actually do it, since if they survive they will insta-kill him. The Phoenix lords don't have this problem, but the are all much more expensive and none of them have an invulnerable save except for Asurmen (who's the most expensive).
So yeah, Yriel is a steal for his point cost, and he's a certified grade-A badass. If you are playing Apocalypse though, I can highly recommend the Phoenix Court of Khaine. It's awesome in every way that it is possible to be awesome. 1500+ points for 7 models? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Edit: More constructively, Karandaras is great. I'll use him when I want to just have fun. There have been a great many games where he's single handedly killed far more then his point cost would suggest. But like all phoenix lords, they can be a bit too pricey.
The way I'm going to be using karandras is finding a unit which I find really deadly or dangerous towards my army and infiltrating him as close as possible to that unit, 12" if no one can see me and then charge them. I find this really useful as there is always a unit which can destroy my plans or wreak havoc on the rest of my army such as lootas, devastator squads or imperial guard weapon platforms. I'm trying to work on this tactic so I can use him competitively.
I played a couple of 1500 point games recently with Maugan Ra attached to a group of gaurdians. I was happy with his performance. In the first game he and the HWP immobilized and removed the main weapon on a venerable dread, then wiped out an 8 man termie squad on one turn. Second game took he alone took out a 5 man tac squad and took an 8 man dev squad down to it's last man before the guardians and Maugan broke and ran.
I've run Jain Zar a few times and she's always a crowd pleaser. I throw her in with a bunch of banshees in a waveserpent - sure they are fire magnet central but who doesn't enjoy 5 S7 I10 power wpn attacks on the charge plus the triskele throw if you didn't need to run

Maugan Ra shouldn't be running anywhere. He's Fearless.Second game took he alone took out a 5 man tac squad and took an 8 man dev squad down to it's last man before the guardians and Maugan broke and ran.
I'm actually sort of sad I don't really have space for PLs in my army, since I just finished painting them a couple weeks ago. Same goes for my Avatar unfortunately. I guess I just need to do more apocalypse!
