    3rd place at rogue trader

yes i brought my tau to the local shop to represent for the greater good. it was the usual 3 game 1850pt. tourney in whihc i placed a surprising (to me at least) 3rd place out of 9. 0-1 named characters allowed.
    the armies were like this:
    3 IG players
    3 Space marine players
    1 blood angel player
    1 tau payer (me)
    2 chaos marine players

pretty nasty line up actually. i dont have my opponent's lists but her is mine (and please no critique, i already played the tourney):
    HQ:
Shas'o: Airbursting Fragmentation Projector, plasma rifle, shield generator, Hard-wired multi-tracker-140

    Elites:
    3x crisis suits: 3x twin-linked flamers, 3x missile pods-186
    5x stealth suits: 5x targeting arrays- 200
    Troops:
    12x fire warriors: Shas'ui/w bonding knife-135
Devilfish: disruption pods, multi-tracker, smart missile system-110

    12x fire warriors: Shas'ui/w bonding knife-135
    Devilfish: disruption pods-85

    12x fire warriors: Shas'ui/w bonding knife-135
    Devilfish: disruption pods-85

    10x kroot carnivores-70
    Fast Attack:
    Heavy Support:

Hammerhead: Railgun, disruption pods, multi-tracker, smart missile system, target lock, flechette dischargers-190

Hammerhead: Railgun, disruption pods, multi-tracker, burst cannon, target lock, flechette dischargers-180

Broadsides: 2x targeting arrays, team leader w/ hard-wired drone controller, 2x shield drones, bonding knife-200

    Total: 1849pts.

    Game 1:

playing an IG player who unsurprisingly went mech, 2 valkyeries and a vendetta, 2 medusas (the AA autocannon things), and a psyker battle squad. the mission was mining dispute which was dawn of war with 5 objectives but the objectives were really mines and something was in there, any unit within 6' took d6 S3 AP- hits. long (and i do mean long) story short it was a tie, the only thing saving me was blasting the vendetta and a valkyrie out of the sky (making 2 vet squads run to my amusement). i would have one it except ne of my hammerheads rolled a 1 on armor pen. to the last valk... so yeah.- 9 points

    game 2:
a very dull bye round- 10 points

    game 3:
final round was the exact army i prayed i wouldnt have to play, an 8 drop pod space marine army with vulkan, and master of the forge (allowing dreadnoughts as heavies and elites). this was brutal (castle corner activate!!) 2 regular dreads, 4 ironcalds, vulkan in a tactical squad, and MoF in tactical squad. it was victory points with some complicated bonus thing, but long story short i won 1080 to 645. the deciding factor was his inability to do anything at all with his meltas. now i know hat your asking "why was that an issue vulkan twin-links them right?" well hitting wasnt his issue, it was the fact he could roll more than a 3 on armor pen and that i couldnt roll less than a 5 for mine. dice werent on his side most of the game.- 18 points

my overall points total was 62pts.

    the standings were:
    1st space marines (go figure)
    2st space marines (go figure)
    3rd tau empire

    "3x crisis suits: 3x twin-linked flamers, 3x missile pods-186"
you overpaid for these. they should only be 126 points.
a team of fireknives is 186

I bet those 57 extra points would have been appreciated someplace else huh?

And congrats on the 3rd spot.

Odd...with one win and two draws (as far as points go, your bye was effectively a tie), you ended up in third place? First and second place must have wrecked face all over the place, and everyone else all tied each other, and lost to the two top guys (and one lost to you). Very unusual for you to place so far up the leaderboard with a 1-0-2 record... must mean there were a lot of 0-1-2 and a couple of 0-2-1 armies out there.

What's more, you're pretty much saying that you got exceptionally lucky in the one game that you did win...and somewhat lucky in the draw. That's supposed to make us feel better about how great tau are in a tournament setting? I dunno, I guess when I read the title about placing third at an RTT with Tau, I was excited to see what amazing army list and tactics made such a feat possible...only find out that you only actually had to play two games, and had ridiculous luck in one of them. Pardon my crushing disappointment!

a bye is a win. It just pairs you down on a tie breaker.

I'm calling it a tie in terms of battle points, though. He got 9 battle points in his tie, 10 in the bye, and 18 in his win. In terms of battle points, 10 is a lot closer to 9 than it is to 18... Personally, I'd actually say his record was 1-0-1, with the bye not counting for as a tie or a win.

    /edit/

Wait...I explained my thinking in my original post:
