A friend and I are planning on having a battle -my Orks vs. his Tyranids. I run a fully mechanized list so I am confident that I can out maneuver his main force. I have never played Tyranids before but after a quick look through their codex it seems that they don't have much long range anti-tank. It looked like this battle would go pretty smoothly- until I found out he has a Tyrannofex- T6, 6wounds, 2+save carrying a 48", S10, Assault 2 gun. I think that if he fielded this against my trucks and battlewagons he could probably cause a lot of havoc. The problem is I don't know how I can counter this beastie. The best I can think of is spamming a bunch of deffcoptas sporting buzzsaws, Alpha strike them and charging the Tyrannofex as soon as possible. This probably wouldn't even take it down though it would prevent it from shooting for a turn or two.
Does anyone have ideas on how to take out a Tyrannofex? Also, do Tyranids have any other anti-tank units, or surprises I should prepare for.
Hmm never faced one but if you're using a good screen setup with cover and battlewagons you should be OK. I'm guessing it has only bs3, so you're getting hit once a turn, and your wagons should be able to stand up OK to that. You could hit it with some kommandos, or rush it with a trukk or two. You could also simply ignore it and focus on the other bugs and hope for the best. Honestly, it should be less of a threat than a pile of lascannon shots.
Ignore it. It is a HUGE investment it costs way to many points, I had the same problem as you but I was running a mechdar and I just ignored it, fight around it the things you want to destroy are the hive guards

Do not appear behind the nid guards as they have heatseaking guns no los needed!
Volume of fire beats high point target every time. If you opponent starts fielding a bunch of str 10 guns, start fielding more infantry. Ooooh str 10 weapons...you killed 12 points of orks this turn! Or 6 points of grots! LOL.
Make sure you have a KFF Mek in one of the wagons. But basically I wouldn't worry about it. One thing warhammer has taught me, is big point sinks are a massive waste of time. They cripple your army. The nid player I routinely play with, actually took out his hive tyrant, and moved to a something prime instead as his HQ, so he could field much more effective units.
Your friend will most likely come to the same conclusion after being wiped out a few battles.
The problem with deathstar units, is exhaust ports .
But seriously, you can deal with that type of annoyance in so many ways. Honestly the only unit I worry about vs nids, is gene stealers, and that crazy auto pass deepstriking monster thing. Look up "how to beat a nightbringer" on youtube. They show you how to do a multi assault so all the wounds get assigned to the nighbringer.
Okay so you guys all seem to indicate that I should just play around the Tyrannofex and that if I really need to kill it I should just sink a whole bunsh shots into. I guess its a good plan and really it shouldn't be that much of a threat to my battlewagons with KFF. So what would you say that the biggest threat to my army (battlewagons trukks and a KFF) would be against nids? Is there any way to counter it? Thanks for all the advice you've already given.
i'm not sure what points your playing at, but generally I like to start using T-fex's at 1500. even at 1000, sure its a big point investment but it does have 3 weapons it can fire, and 2 of those shred infantry, with 1 being his big gun. and can handle an assault.
its not a unit you can straight up avoid like the monolith, but it is something you should save for last if your playing for kp's. and if your going to try and assault it make sure you can close those 12' and not let it shoot at you first.
another threat to your trukks would be hive guard, or units with HVC's (heavy venom cannons) the hive guard have a 24' anti transport null zone they can put out with their non los guns, and the hvc's will cripple your trukks in the starting gate allowing for easier movement on the nid side.
the biggest threat to your trucks is the T-fex as he is the only S10 shooting 'nids posses over 18' with no - modifiers to boot.
