So, First question, how do you guys go about designing you list? Do you just go with the models you have? Look for a fun or competetive edge? Maybe just pick the units that are best suited to krumpin a certain opponent?
Second Question, what kind of List do you run? And why?
Last question. I know most people use Horde, Mech or Kanwall lists but can balanced lists be competative?
Why am I asking these questions? I dunno? Just for abit of insight I guess, and maybe 'cause I dont want to commit my Boyz to one of the extremes.
1) You usually start with working with the models you already have, followed by proxying the ones you'd like to have. Never start off by spending tons of cash. Test play first, then spend. This avoids both wallet shock, and painting shock (being overwhelmed with hundreds of models to paint!)
I personally just play with friends, so I tend to use lists that most of the forum would laugh at. I still win most of the time though, so who knows!
2) I like Kan/Battle wagon lists. Kan's are awesome. Str 10 power weapons up close, and BS3 rockitt's, grotzooka's, and megablasters at distance. Plus they cost barely any points, and you can literarly have 9 killa kans, and a deff dread in a 750 point game. It's pretty insane.
Battle wagons are fun because they're very difficult to kill (especially with a KFF Mek in one), and dumping out 20 slugga boyz into an opponent is devastating. 80 dice are never wrong!
3) Depends where and who you're playing. Orks tend to have an advantage anytime you start throwing buckets of dice around. When in doubt, more boyz. Boyz before toyz. You'll hear these terms a lot.
Haha yeah when I started I had like 60 boyz to paint, needless to say it got pretty tedious.
So do you tend to run the same list all the time? Like do you run a Kan/Battlewagon hybrid list or like one or the other? When you say most people would laugh at your list is that because it wouldnt be deemed "Competative"?
Well i only started collecting orks about 5 months ago.
I first started on massing out ork boys and focused on painting them up - i knew i was not gonna field them any time soon - as currently field my other 2 armies but i wanted to be ready to use them in 2012 where i would put my tau army to bed untill the new codex.
It took me many days and nights to paint up 70+ boys but once i had done that i was in a good position. I now get to paint the more fun units etc.
I did get some deffkopters for the heavy punch in turn one since i knew i would not be getting other massive hitters for a while (and they worked in the first game i had)
I proxied normal warboss as a big mek with KFF and ended up loving that and bought it the next day - the warboss is now on a bike now with the nob bikers i have been converting for the last month.
I got a box of lootas and made both lootas and burners from it so with proxing the other 5 for both i can field units of 10 for both. good thing about orks is that they are normal boys so i just proxi boy and they look good still (not like using a cup for a drop pod type of thing which i dont like) Also orks are great as they are the same so i put the extra weapons from the loota/burner set onto normal boys.
I also used some of my older SM vehicals (the old style rhinos) and used a ton of truck bits to turn them in to looted wagons. and picked up some gretchin.
thats about where i am. I think my next step is HS as i have HQ, ELITE and troops sorted
So i've asked for killa kans for xmas.
I like mixing the army at the moment but know at some point i will have to choose horde or mech. but i will hold of that untill i am willing to buy 2+ battlewagons in one go.
Tau: 6K - W17-D3-L4, Orks: 4K - W9-D0-L2, SM: 7K - W7-D3-L4,CSM: 4K W5-D1-L1, Nids: 3.2K W3-D0-L2
Apoc games (mixture of armies used): W5-D0-L1
I've got a large ork force and my philosophy is some of everything! Get the models you like, the units with the fluff you like, that play the way you like. I've got enough forces to design different lists. Sometimes massive hordes, sometimes fast and furious, etc.
So your goin for a balanced list yeah?
Thats pretty hardcore painting that mate, I woulda given up.
Hope Santa fills your heavy slot for Xmas.
I think thats the approach Im gonna take, units and fluff that I like. So Flash Gitz are in and Lootas are out.
I just buy the units I like (fluff wise and how they look) before play testing (I just ask it here :p)
My list is going to the horde/Trukk list. with lots of boyz, some dakka (lootas) and some Trukk dudes to speed things up a bit.
I have absolutely no idea if my list is going to be competitive,I only play friendlies, but I'm sure I'll enjoy every game I'll be playing be it a victory or loss.
maybe a tip if you like writing/thinking of stories:
write a story for your army or certain characters in it. I'm writing about my Warboss and it adds to the army and, makes the games you'll play more fun (as you can have these affect your stories, and you wont think "O no they shot my warboss..well more boyz were he came from" but "damn they shot Gravtok Headstompa." at least for me, because I like writing
my orks rose up out of a small force i used back in the previous codex that had plenty of boyz in, but just go with what you like and you can't go too far wrong after all whatever you hit with enough force you will kill.
my lists have been an evolving process and it has ended up with a mix of horde/mec/kan wall and i can tell you it is cometitive and fun to play! (i suppose they are 'hybrid' lists') i always end up with something hitting enemy lines and smashing stuff up and in 1500pts it gives you a variety of playstyles to use and in 2000pts i become a 'good' list. i did compete in a 1750pt tournament this year, my very first one in fact, and out of three games i in order did this drawed/won/lost quite good for a first attempt in my view.
anyway i won't go into too much detail but here was the models i used in the tournament army as an example
warboss, joins a unit of 6 nobz with a painboy in a trukk for smashing heads in
big mek with shokk attack gun- for some fun random shooting
a squad of boyz in a trukk for speedy assaults
around 40 odd boyz with sluggas and choppas- slow but always killy
about 20 shoota boyz for sitting on objectives
a deff dread and 3 killa kans for some walking death
about 15 burna boyz in a battlewagon- some flaming death
i think that was about it but in my book that is a hybrid army...
finally welcome to da WAAAGH!
I bought 3 sets of AoBR orks, so this is what I field. I`m not much a competitive player but I beleive any army can be competitive if You know how to use it. (Needs experience.)
I have a trukk list with koptaz (but I got some more koptaz, I`m going to convert them to buggies. That`s gonna be 5+6+3 vehicles at 1850 ) Basically trukks for slugga boyz, wagons for shoota boyz. Orks don`t walk, walking is for gretchin!
Wagon list is the orky Armoured Company, which is slower than a trukk list. I guess it works pretty well with kans. Shame they are in the same slot (except when Nobz got the wagon). Watch out! Dreads are not scoring even when they taken as Troops!
Boyz before toyz!
Oh, there was no more question?
Sorry, my bad!
Hey guys, thanks for all your input, has given me lots to consider.
I dont think Im gonna settle on one list. Instead I'll run my core of my (yet to be named) Warboss with his Nobz in a battle wagon and a few large Boyz squads and then work around that.
