Hello my fellow Archons
I really thought that there would be hell of activity here with our new codex after 12 long years with tons of new discussions about every unit and sleek tactics, but it is rather not overwhelming. Well, lets live things up a bit.
Lets discuss one of my favorite new old units, the Beastmasters.
At first I totally missread the codex entry and thought the 0-x restrictions where for the entire unit, but they are for every beastmaster!
Going through the numbers you can field a reeeeeealy big unit of 30 models by just fielding Khymeraes ... and gaining over 100 attacks on the charge Oo Something like this charging out of a webway portal should be a really scary nightmare for any opponent ... well they ARE living nightmares after all This unit is quite durable, too, because of their 4+ invulnerable save, both against shooting and cc-attacks. Only gripe is that this unit will cost you both, in points and money.
But of course, there is more. Razorwings seem to be everyones favorite and I can see why: big wounds, big attacks and rending. You can field a maximum of 10 Razorwing Flocks per unit and will statistically wipe out a tactical marine squat per round of combat by rending attacks alone. And they are much lighter point wise.
Last but not least are the clawed fiends. They are really terrific beasts with high strength, toughness, wounds and attacks, and they get even better when they are shot to death, so whats not to love about them? Well there won't be many of them, a max of 5 can be fielded in a specialized unit. But this unit would be rather small and compact, maybe small enough to run past some enemies to get to some juicy targets in the back?
Specialized units composed of one kind of beasts are all nice and dandy, but how about mixing them up?
I plan to field a unit composed of 15 Kymeraes and 2 Clawed Fiends out of a webway portal and with one agoniser. They are a little lighter pointwise then going full Khymera and with clever hit allocation it might be possible to control the damage output of the fiends a little bit without losing any models in the process. Especially high S shooting attacks can be quite useful this way.
One thing to consider is, that the beasts themselves won't get any power from pain usage. The only models with pfp are the beastmasters. There is some discussion around because one sentence in the 'sharing the pain' section, but I think it was never the intention of that rule, to give the benefits of the paintokens to units who don't have that rule (much like with the ongoing harlequin discussion), but I digress, this will surely be erataed sooner or later and clarified upon. For the moment I will assume, that only the beastmasters get any use out of the paintokens, if it later turns out that the entiry beastunit can benefit from them I will be most happy, but I really can't see that coming.
So, discuss away, share your experiences or ideas. Maybe the number crunshers out there have the formula for the best damage output against different armies?
Can the beastmaster really benefit from PfP if the entire unit does not?
Now for the beastmaster unit, I am going to use the 15 Khymera screen for wyches moving across the field.
For 210 points, you have 60 Rending attacks on the charge along with 55 wounds...

The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. Bring them understanding of the power of ourselves through our strength and their fear. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all fragments will be smashed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be consumed

Well I am going to play it the way, that only the beastmasters get pfp and the beasts don't. Should it be erataed in the beasts way it will be a majour boost, and should it not I won't be scolded by my mates
But honestly, Khymeraes with fnp would be a real pain in the ass. Two 4+ against nearly anything, this can't be what they were aiming for when they decided, that you could field THAT many in one unit.
If you take a look at Archon retinue you will notice that some creatures in retinue have PfP while others do not. Similarly in Beastmaster unit bm has PfP but others do not. I think this alone is pretty clear indication that PfP only affects the models that have the special rule in their profile.
