So what is the well-equipped archon wielding this edition?
Last ed, my archon could reliably pump S5 power weaponry via Punisher and drugs (or even 6 if he brought along his reaver...). This ed - I don't see anything easy that replicates this. Combat drugs - now not individually choosable; the Soul-trap - very conditional.
Is the S3 Huskblade sufficiently scary, or should I just give up and go with Blaster pistol + Agoniser?
Or is the Venom blade the new black for the sheer number of wounds it should cause?
Ive been going with the classic agoniser + pistol. Ive not even been taking a blast pistol since its highly unlikely I will be shooting at armour, and for the sake of 1 shot a splinter pistol wounding ona 4+ all the time is good enough for me.
My usual load out is pistol (usually splinter) agoniser, drugs, shadow field and ghostplate armor. In a squad of 4 incubi mounted in a venom. It seems to be the right amount of incubi to not overkill in 1 round of combat, and the agoniser means that even when I accidently get charged by a sneaky carnifex, I still win.
Also, the ghostplate armor can be a lifesaver. I was dubious about it since I had the shadowfield, but once I lost the Shadow field to very lucky bolter fire one turn, and in CC the ghsot plate got me a very lucky save against a single power fist. Fair enough its 6+ invuln, but when the archon in some cases can win you the battle, its worth the 10 points for a backup save.
I'm primarily planning on going with the Agonizer for all the reasons you mentioned. I'm not sold on the soul trap/husk blade combo; it seems too expensive and situational for me. The agonizer isn't going to cut through swaths of MEQs, but it's reliable against a lot of varieties of enemies and its pretty cheap. I'm with gimpy on the blast pistol though, if your archon is within 6'' of an enemy vehicle that hasn't already been slagged you're doing something wrong.
Agoniser + splinter pistol for me. That seems to be the most efficient combo for an all-comer's list.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
Agoniser + Pistol + Shadowfield + drugs... So no suprises there, just the good old Archon we know and love. S3 just don't cut it on a combat character. When with incubi I add the Phantasm Grenade Launcher.

this huskblade and soul-trap looks like a good combo
Gonna try Djin blade, splinter pistol, soul trap for the 6 attacks on charge + 2 more from djin. Remember on your 2nd pain token you get furious charge so that's +1 str when you charge in (I think as I've misplaced the main rule book somewhere). So 8 power weapon attacks and if i kill an independant character S6 attacks ^^

Relictors 3rd company
See that's the thing - it all seems so conditional. '2nd pain token' - that's two unit kills or good use of chronos/haemonculi tricks. 'If' you kill an IC - which your opponent will do his darndest to prevent. Otherwise, sure, lots of attacks, but S3. Not to mention the 1/6 chance of the djin blade eating your archon's face off every combat phase.
Please post back know how this combo works out. I want to be convinced that the Archon didn't get ripped off this edition (which is really the only complaint I have at all about the codex at all!)
The old agoniser/splinter pistol/combat drugs combo from the previous 'dex is cheap, effective, and can take on just about anything. I always pair this combo with a group of Incubi, so I add in a PGL.

The Iron Cage
I run mine with Agoniser, Blast Pistol, Drugs and Shadow Field. If he joins Incubi, I toss in the Phantasm Grenades.
The Blast Pistol may seem like a poor choice at first, what with bad range and all that, but sometimes a golden situation rises up when you can draw a bead on the enemy and blow up a tank. I felt really proud when my Archon one-shot a BA Vindicator, thus earning his points back then and there. If the pistol itself does nothing to me all game, then so be it, at least it'll provide an extra melee attack and I didn't pay too much for it.
