Welcome to Librarium Online!
Howdy folks, BA's done i'm moving back to my 1st love in 40k, Dark eldar, problem is i'm an awkward player here's why:
I like my lists to be as competitive as possible
I like my lists to be themed and have some character to them
I'm useless at converting!
These things don't seem to mix very well with the new dex, i'm desperatly trying to find an army theme that'll work but i'm struggling and need some help, here's what's caught my fancy:
The baron leading a loose coalition of upper spire gangs (scourges, hellions, jetbkiers, voidravens and razorwings jetfighters and some warriors in venoms).
A force led by a (preferably ancient) haemonculi (Haemonculi, grotesques, wracks, talos, cronos engines, maybe a few warriors and some webway portals) - problem here is the lack of models for wracks and grots
Q is which of these do you think would be the most competitive and require the least conversion? i'm leaning toward the baron myself.
Thanks for all the help!
If you can apply tiers to lists I personally don't think a true haemonculi army will be at the top, but that is just my opinion.
Want to find a competitive army list for Dark Eldar? First off you find the most popular style list at your local gaming area and build whatever Dark Eldar list beats the crap out of that and hope you don't find too many players building army lists designed to beat the army lists designed to beat the top army lists.
League Stats: Orks 4W-1L-1T, CSM 4W-2L-0T, Dark Eldar 10W-6L-4T, Tau 3W-1L-1T, Blood Angels 4W-1L-1T, Imperial Guard 2W-1L-0T
Tourney Stats: Blood Angels 6W-0L-0T, Dark Eldar 2W-1L-0T
Well since there aren't new models to alot of the ideas you have i'm sure you will be able to get away with proxying alot for a few months until you figure out what is most competitive.
I think that "The" Dark Eldar competitive list will look alot like the old codex lists but with 3 cheap haemonculus to spread pain tokens.
"Thank him who puts me loath to this revenge on you who wrong me not for him who wrongd"
Thanks for the tips guys, guess i'll just see about proxying a few things in friendlies for now, sadly my group is so varied that i'll find it very hard to make a list designed to beat them, there is no 'main' list type that comes to mind.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you what a "competitive list" is. They'll just recite the last list they lost too because they don't know their own army well enough.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!

There's plenty of ideas for themed armies straight out of the codex, and as has been stated, being compeditive comes from knowing your army, knowing your enemy, having a solid understanding of rules and tactics and having a plan. Remember that the top players are where they are because they've perfected their skill as a General, not because they have the latest "ZOMFG MAI SPETZ MERINEZ IZ HARDCORE!" list to spring up.
But I digress - plenty of themes to work with. The Spire Gang idea is great - an all airborne (sort of) force led by the Baron would move and hit fast. I can tell you from firsthand experiance that a group of 4-6 Reavers using Bladevanes every turn will mince any non-MEQ unit. If you don't want to go out on a limb, you can always try a personalised Kabal/Cult/Coven list. With the exception of a Coven which (fluff wise) is limited to Haemies, Wracks and Grots....maybe Mandrakes if you want... there's a buttload of ways to swing with your theme. Perhaps you want an aristocratic Archon who's escourted by his Court and surrounded by Trueborns? Maybe your Archon is more brutal and employs Incubi and Mandrakes? Does your Wych Cult stick with "Arena" units only, or have they conscripted a Hellion gang and some Reavers?
Your theme is limited only by your imagination.
