At our gaming club today my friend (tau) was playing against necrons and got completely whooped (it was only a 40 minutes game) but talking about it afterwards, we just couldn't figure out how exactly tau could deal with necrons, and other 3+ armies, besides having loads of crisis suits. anyone got any useful advice? :hmm:
Lots of firewarriors
Use ap or instant death so they cant make their wbb rule

I don't understand why you discount "loads of crisis suits" as a battle plan.

Well I play necron, so I'll tell you some tau things I find good, and things that suck to.
Good: I don't know what their called, but those suit guys that fly around and shoot you whith rapid fire plasma and then go hide some where... Those are really effective.
Sucks: Hammer Heads (UNLESS you give them Ion Cannons) suck against necron first turn they will get poped, for the points I would use brod sides (don't think I spelled that right), these are much more effective and WAY harder for the necron player to destroy. Anything whith a 2plus save is VERY hard for a necron player to kill.
Good: Kroot, just take a 20 man sqd whith wings they wll own necrons in CC. Be sure to hide them well, if they get in the open some how they will die that turn.
Sucks: The Stealth Suits (I hope I'am thinking of the right unit  ). They have S5 weapons but they just always seem to die by the hands of the MIGHTY WRAITHS, or the very sneaky Flayed Ones :shifty: .
Good: Path Finders owned me . Thats all I can say about them.
And I think I've already said take brod sides right? Take 2 odds say you should be able to pop the lith whith 2. I hope my post helps . But we all know Necron own tau jk
Us tau players sadly have very few options against the necrons. We can use seeker missiles but those get very expensive very quickly. We can use broadsides and I would absolutely suggest three if not more. We can use Ion cannons but the necrons get their we'll be back roll against them, and with crisis we can use plasma (for more shots) or fusion (to deny the WB. Unfortunately, none of those options put out alot of fire very quickly, and all but the broadside rail guns and crisis fusion allow the WBB roll. In a straight up kill each other scenario, tau are hard pressed to defeat necrons, and there's not much to be done about it.
I thought weapons that ignore armor saves (including AP wise) kill a cron outright? If i'm not mistaken they do (got a small cron force myself).... so Ion Cannons would OWN against Cronz... Plasma rifles would own just as well.... and Broadsides... that's all i can think of right now....
to kill them outright you need to double toughness, AP just ensures a wound, and thus, a wbb roll is possible.
I haven't fought against necrons very much, if not once. Though by the sounds of it you need the same kind of army aimed at space marines(3+save) but with a little more emphasis on weapons strength to get outright kills.
Criss suits look to be good at dispatching necrons, due to the plasma rifles not allowing saves, and the missle pods having the same strength as an ion cannons, so i assume that if it does land a wound the model is killed outright.
Broadsides will obviously tear through them quite well, but as i said before I've never played necrons so i don't know if there will be enough high priority targets that would prevent you from shooting the main troops.
Protect your frailty in a Mechanical body.
Remove your frailty with mobility.
Hide your frailty in a body unseen.
Use a Hammerhead with an Ion Cannon, Missile System. ( Make sure it has Gun Drones, 4 Seeker Missiles, and Disruption Pod )
3 Broadside Battlesuits with Missile Systems. ( In a Team of 2, and a Independant )
Give your Crisis suits Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, and Multi-Trackers.
Pathfinder Squad - 8 with Carbine Markers ( Put 4 Seeker Missiles on their Devil Fish, and Disruption Pod )
6 Man Firewarrior Teams to take advantage of Marker Lights.
Finish with a Kroot Carnivore Squad in Woods near your Main force.
Sling those Seekers before the Vehicles they belong to get destroyed, and pray that you can take out enough to phase the enemy out.
You only deny the WBB if you double their toughness (so str 8 for warriors, str 10 for destroyers), or ignore their armour save in close combat. As such, the only three weapons in the tau arsenal that deny WBB are the fusion gun, the rail gun and the seeker missile. Also, if there's a res orb near the squad you're shooting at, they still get it
JohnClark is right, you have to take out the Lord first because he will have a Resurrection Orb and still get the WWB roll. I myself as a necron player would use flayed ones and a lith to deep strike and tear you up. Also I would use Scarab Swarms to tie up you suits and HH's.
