Firstly I like to say hi, this is my first post on this forum.
There have been many different attempts to make a close combat tau, both officially
XV9 Hazard close support team
O’shavah – Commander Farsight
And by tau players creating fluff on the mont’au, demon bound crisis battlesuits, lost/abandoned teams that have been forced to change their combat styles to survive and so on.
This post is designed to do two things
Firstly has anyone heard of any realistic fluffs that may works regarding close combat tau.
Secondly, the tau (unaltered) are not a close combat army, its a fact, however the Ethereals are, has anyone heard of any fluff about, Ethereals have battle suits built and leading the tau firewarriors by example. Also what are people’s feelings about this?

There is fluff about ethreals being melee fighters... one supposedly fights off dozens of orks on his own. But as far as rules go... it is a joke.
Secondly the XV9 Hazard suits are not CC fighters. They are short ranged skirmishers. They cannot win in melee any better than other suits, they just have defenses in place to allow them to play footsie with assault armies up in the front.
Farsight is actually pretty good in melee.
As to realistic close combat fluff... technically the Kroot are supposedly savage and deadly in melee... though again on what grounding in rules I have found nothing. You could -possibly- say Tau soldiers train with kroot or something in hand to hand combat... but even then they won't be all that great.
Finally, I the ethreals already lead from the front in a lot of fluff... just not in battlesuits... instead they wear nothing and ask the enemy to shoot them nicely.
Anytime you say Tau, you may not say close combat afterwards. Tau is the hardest army to play competitively simply because it lacks what all other armies emphasize in some way or another, ASSAULT. We can only delay assault by first, kroot, more kroot, and then some insane volume of fire at the closest threat.
But if you are playing campaign and a non tournie game, build the fluff around Kroot training Etherals, or suits with better articulated joints that hit faster/stronger.
Otherwise, play Eldar or Ultra Marines. CC is not here to be found or even made up.

i like how tau are all about shooting from a distance. i dont really see why tau would need close combat units besides kroot
Guard don't assault either. sure there are some fun assault guard lists but none of them are viable in tournaments. But as far as assault tau go your best bet is kroot which are even tau.

Tau lack in close combat. Kroot are our best option but compared to other close assault units they are pretty weak. Farsight isnt bad but once you take him you lose the kroot. Really though Farsight can't really hope toi match up against other special characters in close combat.
I like Tau the way they are as they aren't falling into the trend of more and more CC to be found out there. I have maintained a fairly competitive list in tournaments but am getting wins less and less frequently with them. Still the people who play against me dislike the fight as I always at least make them work hard for their win, making them pay for every gain. Sometimes it's just fighting the good fight.

farsight is good against anything but HQ choices
if youre fighting special character nutjobs you mustnt take him becus he is a deader
he is good against heavy armored forces
none-special chars space marines/ necrons without nightbrind/deceiver
that's mostly good
he is to vurnable for long slugging matches and need AT LEAST 2 bodyguard because everybody is going to shoot at him because they know he can wipe out a tactical squad with ease
also XV-9's are VERY good close support 6 pulse submition rifles *drool* wil make most horde players run to their huge green/other coloured mommies
