Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am in progress of building my first Tyranid army and now I have a question.
What shall I arm my Termagaunts with? Just stick with the Fleshborers or make them a shooty unit with Devourers albeit at the double cost. Having 16 x 3 shots at 18" do feel quite tempting but the cost is a bit too high.
Cheap meatshield or expencive and able to fire back?
As far as im concerned the two arent mutually exclusive. However i would only take termaguants unless they have a fully tricked out tervigon, or devourers.
Without either of those, they become near useless, very fragile and almost unable to do anything of value on the attack.
Ive found a brood of 20 or so with devourers in a pod to be a VERY nasty tactic, albeit a slight one hit wonder. Not sure about footslogging them but i imagine theyd die too fast.
So in summary, if you want a shooty unit that will put out a lot of damage but be very fragile, take devourers. If your running tervigons too, take fleshboarers. If not, dont bother at all.

The "tricked out" Tervigon might be a later addition to my swarm but for starters I think it is a bit expencive on a 1000 point game. I am however going to build a spore so your idea of putting a brood in that with Devourers sounds fun. Scaring the crap out of my IG/Eldar friends, that will. Thanks for the ideas.

AHAH. Devourer caps!? That's a great idea! I felt kind of badly about maybe having to buy two boxes of gants only to forever have them be Devils, but it's kind of odd I never thought of this before myself. Thanks for the idea!
ooh, the caps are a great idea +1 for sure
I like devourers. They give a good rate of fire and put on more pressure forcing an opponent to deal with the Gaunts instead of something else. I think that they also allow things like Tyranid warriors to either be upgraded to deathspitters or allow the Gaunts to do all the shooting while the Warriors focus on assault. The devourers help to focus the different broods of the swarm I think.
