Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi, thinking of starting a dark eldar army.
I love some of the models and the web way portal seams awesome from a fun point of view, but how well does it work in games???
Would it be effective to rush a pair of archons with portals up each flank?? I was thinking of using hellions and mech infantry deployed and bring foot sloggers in through the portals
The army would be mainly combat oriented but still with a bit of fire support.
Would this work or just lead to many defeats?
e: the portals dont have to be on Archons, I'm happy to take a haemonculus with one

the more WWP (as i refer to them) = more control as you can decide where to bring your incubi/wyches/warriors - infact ALL your army! (apart from vehicles) all that's needed is a venom (to transport both Archons) on the table and your opponent won't know what's hit him until there are no models left!
I made a list centered around the WWP for 2000pts maybe that might help you get some ideas...
i was thinking a pair of warrior units with each archon in raiders so i can put one down each flank. Is it worth getting all the way across the board before i deploy the WWP or just as far as i can on the first turn, ie 12'' up
e: or use a pair of haemonculus for the WWP's

Portals are great fun and I feel are very competitive - of course, that depends on your delivery system and units that will come out of the portal.
My suggestion is if you do go with Haemonculi as portal carriers then I would entertain at least 1 squad of wracks (now a troop choice because of the Haemy) as they are higher in toughness, they start with FnP and have Furious Charge with the accompanying Haemy. Warriors are fine too as they too would have FnP with a Haemy attached but higher toughness is a definite bonus over the warriors (especially if they are on a raider).
As for the Archon's as wwp deployers, the shadow field is nice and all but they are a little expensive to waste a turn of doing nothing other than dropping the portal. In 2 games I used an Archon he either died too early or never got close to the action. He definitely becomes a priority target and really easy for the enemy to avoid since he is on foot.
I would refrain from getting too aggressive with the portals but simply dropping the portals near the mid-point of the table should be safe. I've have gotten too aggressive once and even though I had the portal opened the pack of Thunderwolf cavalry charged and killed my squad and surrounded the portal with the consolidation move - very bad! Sure, the Reavers with caltrops didn't have a problem getting out but my foot units had to emerge from my table edge.
There is definitely an art to making the WWP list work well so there is no "easy button" - your deployment of the portals will change depending on the mission, who goes first, the enemy deployment and terrain of the board (not to mention the type of units that are coming out of the portal).
I suppose it would be easier if you posted a list.

well i haven't made a proper list yet because i wasn't really sure if how to best complement the portals, but i got a rough idea what i want.
Probably a pair of Haemy's with some wracks each to place wwp
archon with incubi
some warriors with raiders
maybe some true born, scourges and reavers
There is some speculation by an IG player that the 2 portal approach won't work.... LOL, looking forward to proving him wrong by mincing his army. His argument here is that he will just remain 18 inches from the portals and shoot the whoopy do out of you as you come out. What he doesn't realise is that 2 well placed portals won't give him room to do that. Even if it does, I have him another way, as his army will now be within 2d6 of the board edge, oh dear, and guard only have Ld 7 or 8....
As we're already talking portals, I figured I'd put this in here.
If I have a webway portal in my army, can I bring a unit in reserve in through it, and their dedicated transport in via some other means (deepstrike/table edge)? Or do you have to be in a transport when coming on the table? (and therefore unable to use the portal)
If I've replied, i've probably used Italics...

All it means is no other unit can start the game in the transport. But that unit can start where they want. If you have a Raider then I'd suggest stick your Archon and a smallish elite unit in that and use it to get the portal amongst the enemy quickly, then you can overwhelm them with your reserves. Better still, get 2 archons (you can use Kabalite sprue for that btw), both with portals, up to 9 elites in Raiders.... Watch the horror on your opponents face when they have 2 webway portals right in among their army.
