Hello there LO dwellers!
I really want to start an Ork army, but Im REALLY not sure about the type of army i want, I sorta want to do a mechanized army (so lots of Trukks carrying my boys and some more elite units) with my warboss in a battle wagon and a retinue of nobs.
All this sounds cool, but i dont have a part time or full time job so I'm afraid of the cost of things.... so could you guys (or girls ) gimme a hand working out a list that is sort of mechanized, game effective, but also is cost effective for someone like me..

I'm glad you are leaning towards the Orks! So here's some feedback/thoughts that could help you out.
First, if you don't have a copy of the codex, get one. You don't have to buy a copy either, just borrow one from a friend who has it, or really take some time to read over one in the store. It never ceases to amaze me how many people will try to build an army but forgo buying a codex - it's your bible when it comes to the greek-skinned friends! At any rate, reading through the codex will help you develop some army builds when you see how certain units work together, or in contrary ways.
Second, scour over the army lists on these forums. There are so many threads to different army builds out there, and an equal amount of feedback. Talk to people at your gaming store, or talk to your friends if you play with a certain group of people. (Unless of course you're building the army as a surprise.) But at least do some back research on the effectiveness of certain builds. There are many players on here that have much more experience than me, they play more frequently and with greater vigor. I'm always looking for other people's input to help make me a better warhammer player; I don't have nearly enough time to make all the mistakes myself, ha! Regardless, I know that LO is a great source for advice in many different areas!
Third, regarding money, start small and build bigger over time. The biggest caveat in all Ork armies is boys before toys. Simply put, you need that strong backbone of boys to get the job done. Commandos, Deffkoptas, Weirdboys all come later. Indeed they're fun, but without the core of ork boys, they're nothing. So aim for a reasonable sized army list of 1000 to 1500 points, and build just that. If money is an issue (and its an issue for all of us) buy just what you need.
Finally, if you'd like my suggestion for a quick cost-effective army right out the shoot, allow me to suggest picking up two Battleforces and some bits. Two Battleforces will give you a nice sized core for a speed freak army: Two trucks, six bikers, and a contingent of boys. You'd do really well to pick up some boys from AoBR too - they can be found en masse in the bits bins. (At least at some of the store I've been to) Finally, you'll need a Warboss (again, from AoBR) and some Nobs with power klaws; a third truck and Mek with a KFF wouldn't hurt either. All tolled, you could pick it up for about $250. It gives you something small, but it'll be fun and a good way to get into the army.
So I hope this helps. Welcome to the LO forums! It's a good place to get some advice and whatnot.
Great post Jroode, for starters. You hit some good points. With the things that you mentioned you can build up a good mechanized list (speed freeks/evil sunz). They also require fewer models/points in general and you'll have less painting than most footslogging ork lists. I second the battleforce idea. If you want, you can convert the bikers over to biker nobz. If you search this forum or have played against them before, biker nobz squads are an incredibly powerful unit and they cost a lot of points so are fairly cost-effective for the chunk of points you're getting. Trukks and battlewagons are both great, and as mentioned, having lots of of boyz is essential. You can find how to most effectively equip all these units around the forum. Once you've secured at least a couple vehicles full of boyz you can branch out with any other units. One thing to remember is that nobz can be made troop choices for each warboss you have, so having a few units of boyz and backed up by some nobz, biker or mechanized, is a great core army that can hold objectives well in the game. I second the big mek with kustom force field mention, as it can give your vehicles some great protection. Grots are useful to hold objectives as you zoom around destroying enemies with your main force. Lootas are also a very popular choice, as they're great for their point value and are versatile with great range. Scour the forums and give a shout if you have any other specific questions, and have fun starting your force!
thank you so much for the tips jroode and seanchadith (you will both get a healthy reward of rep!!), i already have AoBR which will help me hopefully...
and btw, the army is a bit of a surprise to my friends as i have always been a devout and zealous servant of the Emperor! but in any case i have always wnted to do orks as they are just so fun to play!!! i will report back with an update of my WAAAGH! when i reach 1000points so keep an eye out for me!
