Welcome to Librarium Online!
Although the "scarab rush" is a definate strategy, I would certainly not discount the power of a destroyer heavy army. My destroyer heavy army was only stopped by a freakin' army of Deathwing Terminators, and even then I caused a shitload of dead terminators. I lost my last game against Tyranids because I changed from my usual all destroyer army to a "balanced one." Even then, I only lost due to one bad dice roll. Necrons Rawk
Have you played it using the version 4 rules?
As soon as you pop your destroyers in the open, everything that can shoot at them will attempt to.
If your opponent has any tanks then these don't even have to make a Ld roll to shoot at them. They die to easily for the amount of points they cost.
Every game i've played they've all been taken out in a single turn. The only way to counter this I suppose is to run 2 units together but at 500 points that is too expensive for me.
Incidentally if anyone wants more destroyers then pm me - i have another 4 unassembled ones to get rid of.
Actually, ever since 4th edition came out, I've revamped my lists so that I have at least 2 squads of 3 destroyers a piece, specifically for this reason. However, I'm not entirely sure how quickly they get destroyed if I just have one squad, as this has not happened to me yet. At any rate, I take my destroyers in at least 2 squads and spend the last Fast Attack choice on some scarabs, usually. This way, I can ensure that they will have to divide their fire between the two squads, which has consistently increased my chances that they will be able to get their WBB's if downed. All in all, not a bad strat.
