Welcome to Librarium Online!
Recently i played two games with my orks against a fairly assaulty chaos army. 1500 points, a about a third of mine was 1 squad f ten nobs in a battlewagon. kitted out, 3 pks, painboy, etc... in both games, they ran forwards, 1st and second turn assault. they then proceeded to obliterate his army while the rest of my army pretty much sat back and watched.
basically, i am just wondering. what are other peoples opinions of nobs, and how effective have you seen then be?
also, what would you think of an army with 2 warbosses, 10 nob bikers, 10 nibs in bw, and fill the rest with gretchin and trukk mounted boys. could it be effective?
I normally run with a squad of 8-10 knobs with a mega armour warboss and BW. I have found that they are very expensive however also a giant soak of enemy fire. My bro inlaws eldar army spent 4 turns of pumping pretty much his whole army's shots into them including Doom whilst my boyz closed in and hacked him apart
They're great. They do run the risk of getting shot to bits by high-strength guns, but they're very versatile and can handle a variety of threats, from basic infantry to armored targets. The models are great and you can convert them like crazy. And, as mentioned, they get a lot of attention and can be a great distraction if needed.
They have 2 wounds from memory and 3 CC attacks (?) which makes them pretty potent if you add in furious charge.
I love Nobz (now thats a sentence I thought i'd never write!) The models, the fluff and in game. I never commit to a full 10 man squad though, too many points for me!
I think the Painboy is a MUST HAVE upgrade. Nobz without it are tragic.
But yeah, they just hack through whatever is stoopid enough to get in the way.
I've found them to be a massive point sink that would be better spent elsewhere. I face nids, IG, and tau very often, and all of these guys have high str and/or low ap weapons. This completely wipes out everything but their 5+ invul save, removes FNP, and if I fail the roll, they instantly die (str 8 vs 4 T). Because of that, I find they never make up their points, and the loss of the unit is usually devastating to the rest of the army.
If they get in CC, they can't handle the MC's, due to their power weapons (good bye armor save, and FNP, and instant death again....). So they end up fighting units that even the normal boyz would have wiped out.
Vs SM/Chaos marines they are fantastic...but honestly what isn't? Orks usually steamroll/table them anyway without special help.
Keep in mind for the price that most people spend on nob bikers (with painboy), you can run 60 shoota boyz with nob pk/bp's, and usually have room to give those boyz squads tons of other weapons.
i have played IG with my nobs amd found them to be effective, but i' ve never really played the other armies so i can't really comment on them. As for IG, i played agaainst foot heavy army with a couple of tanks, and some sentinals. the nobs withstood the lasgun fire pretty easy, and they were concentrating the powerful stuff on my 30 man boys squads. the nobs just went for the stuff that could take them out first and that seemed to work pretty good. also if tanks are causing you a problem then try putting them in a BW with deff rolla.
Ya the problem with that, is it only works once. The next time, the nobz get targeted almost immediately, and wiped off the board. IG has so much either AP 2, or high str weapons, that the whole FNP and 2W's becomes mute. Not to mention the hydra's kill the 3+ cover save (turbo boosting) and 4+ armor saves.
As for the BW, I find normal nobz even less valued pointwise (except maybe a small group of MANZ). 3 manz is decent, a group of normal nobz and a painboy? Another super high point unit.
That's at least my experience. Small group of nobz extremely vulnerable to fire? Or 60 boyz. I'm taking the boyz from now on. I always find the more points something costs in the ork codex, the less useful and flexible it is.
Heck I even run stormboyz and kommando's in 5 person units. They're fantastic! Cheap is the word of the land!

If you take nobz with a painboy, you can pay for each nob to have a cybork (+5 invul save).
So on a nob biker with a painboy biker..you have....
4+ armor, 4+ cover, 5+ invul, and FNP, at 4(5)T (5 T except for instant death calculation) and 2 W.
It's a very difficult unit to kill...unless your opponent is fielding a high str, low ap weapon army...then they tend to lose everything but the 4+ or 5+ save.
