2 OK, sometimes, I guess.
3 A solid choice.
4 An exceptional unit.
5 Put this in your army.
This is part of a group of polls on how powerful various units are to help me in the writing of my new tactica. I am not going to post my opinions straight away as I don't want to influence people.
This poll is about the HQ choice Archon. To get a better handle on what the voting scale represents you can read it in its entirety Here
I will say here as I think it is important when talking about Archons (or anything else in these polls, but particularly Archons), we are talking from an army building perspective and WITHIN our army. So points cost matters and whether it is better than Mephiston does not. Additionally when comparing it to other HQs remember that winning in a straight fight doesn't neccessarily make a leader powerful, what I mean here is that special abilities that mess with how your army works, things that mess with the FOC etc are all things you should take into account.
Over nine thousaaaaaaaaaaand!!!!!!!
League Stats: Orks 4W-1L-1T, CSM 4W-2L-0T, Dark Eldar 10W-6L-4T, Tau 3W-1L-1T, Blood Angels 4W-1L-1T, Imperial Guard 2W-1L-0T
Tourney Stats: Blood Angels 6W-0L-0T, Dark Eldar 2W-1L-0T
A solid 4, the archon would be a 5 in any other codex except DE have - y'know - probably the most internally balanced codex ever written.
The truly exceptional part is he fits in with the other HQ's perfectly, with nobody stepping on each other's toes which sadly few other codices ever get close to.
Yeah I would say logically he's a 4, But Personally he's my favorite and I never leave home with-out him, He's just too classey, so I say 5.
Huskblade, shadow field, Ghostplate Armour, Combat drugs, Soul trap and WWP = deadly combination! add a SECOND archon with a simmilar loadout, and you have guarenteed a pair of fire magnets (so the rest of your army can survive without too much problem
an absolute 4, nearly 5 but the codex is just so balanced that it is hard to make it a solid 5- choices, choices....
anyway at least they got an extra base attack, plus a lot of cool new gear but for me the trusy agoniser and shadowfield combo is just too good- couple that with ghostplate armour (just in case...) and the phantasm grenade launcher to help his incubi out he does well when my rolling is ok. Damm that pesky nugle marine who turned him into a spawn one game.
I agree, a solid 4. The archon is certainly the best HQ choice in the codex IMHO, but the others also have their place. In fact I'm not sure there are any must-have units in the Eldar codex.
The art of Eldar: Paint clean, play dirty!
I think the Archon is a solid choice however I end up taking haemonculi instead because the free pain point is too good to pass up.
Haemonculi with liquifier gun (60 points) is so powerful for his point cost and how his attached squad has feel no pain just to much to pass up
Great with wracks (2 tokens for CC awesomenes), incubi (3+ save and FnP), grotesques (Provide cheap LD), warriors (now more survivable when raiders die), trueborns (cover save and FnP is a deadly combo), etc. He really adds so much instant survivability I often take 3.
