Necrons will beat Tau and Imperial Guard usually. There are however some forces that you will always struggle against. Tyranids for example, simply because Necrons lack the weapons to take out a lot of big alien nasties.

A lot of people think Necrons are an easy and forgiving army to play. Well maybe they are if you're playing someone who doesn't know what they are doing, but against an experienced player, if you get a squad isolated from the rest of the force then that could well cost you the game.

Necrons really excel against tank based armies, simply because everyone with a gauss weapon (that's just about everyone) can take out a vehicle.

there was a thread recently addressing the pros and cons of necrons. find that to answer your first question.

necrons will almost always beat the living crap out of the tau. necrons are tough enough to take away the tau's real big shooting advantages, and can rape them in CC. imperial is a mixed bag. if you get playing against someone with 3 basilisks, who is good at guessing distances, things can get pretty grim, pretty quick. if you just have to survive the flashlight attacks, then its not so bad.

the only army necrons really have problems with is space marines i think. ive not heard too many complaints about tyranids, but everyone seems to hate SpaM.

Don't see why necrons would have a problem with marines... the gauss just cooks their tanks, and in most other respects, it's like marines vs. marines.

Plus, don't marines' 3+ armor saves get in everybody's way? At least necrons have their 'lith, heavy destroyers, and staves of light/particle projectors to penetrate the powered armor. My bugs always have problems with smurfs until the big guys get into cc... and they always get shot up.

Of course, since I've started a necron army, my tune could change pretty fast.

p.s. necrons and bugs have the coolest models of all!

Heh, you're right for the most part. I think the reason why Necrons have the hardest time with marines is that they too are a 3+ save army (albeit they don't get a 4+ WBB roll), AND they are capable of fielding much more heavy weapons and *effective* close combat squads than Necrons can. I'm sure many would agree with this evaluation whereas others would disagree with it, but in my experiences, this has been the case. Now, that's not to say that Necrons don't perform well against them, it's just that we in general perform less well.

the problem necrons have vs SpaM, is the fact spam can field a large number of weapons that ignore our WBB rolls, and our 3+ armor saves. in return we cant field a hell of a lot that kills them off with ease (the monolith is really the only good spam killer we have).

quite frankly, a lot of people over-exaggerate when it comes to necrons vs spam. a tactical squad is inferior to a squad of necron warriors, even in CC. its when you start seeing huge amounts of special weapons, big terminator squads, and related things that spam get annoying.

It has actually been my experience that marines have trouble with necron. The unit costs are generally about the same except that marines don't get back up when they die. This gives the necron a big advantage. Plus the necron have quite a few close combat units like flayed ones and wraiths that will put the hurt on any tactical or scout squad out there. The only way I have managed to beat necron is by thinning them out with some long range fire and bolters then charging in with things like terminators and veteran sergeants.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!

i think it depends on the SpaM army. armies like space wolves, and iron hands are annoying for example.

i find that necrons can beat the crap outta tau unless the guy is a really good tactician or gets really lucky. against Imp.Guard i have lost some against them but i usually win. i just love to watch my IMp gaurnd friend quit once he loses his tanks, such a poor loser...

IG focus your fire on the basilisk though it is funny to see it blow holes in troops
