need some advice my mate who uses space marines has just got 2No blood angels furioso dreadnought and 1No stormraven. he usual fields jump troops at the moment.
advice / suggestions on what would be the ideal unit i could field to combat this ?
You shouldn't be looking for one unit to deal with everything - you need ranged anti-tank to deal with the vehicles, and tbh if you get the charge against BA jump troops you'll do a lot better than if they get the charge on you.
I like to use rokkitt buggies. I wouldn't go into close combat with the furioso dred, it tears up our boyz!
If he's fielding dreadnoughts with Blood Claws, try to tie them up with Killa Kans - Blood Claws aren't a dreadnought CCW and so will be fairly unlikely to break your Kans' armor, while the Kans have CCWs that can definitely penetrate back (not that they can hit that easily). You sure don't want to feed anything unarmored to them in close combat! There's also ramming with deffrollas. Lootas might have a tough time unless you can catch it on the side or rear (not too likely).
A BA army full of jump troops and dreads isn't something you fight by waaaaghing and running at it. A shootier list than normal will have big advantages, especially if you can get the boyz into cover and then just dakka-dakka away at the enemy. Save your units with klaws to deal with attackers with feel no pain - you'll need 'em. You might even consider bringing a shokk attack gun - you're more likely than normal to get opportunities to drop that big template on a whole unit of feel-no-pain jump infantry that just came in via deep strike, and even a medium-strength hit of large blast AP2 can ruin their entire day. (For that matter, you're a lot more likely to get a clean shot at jump infantry in the open.)
Don't forget boom guns. They've got the magic # str 8, followed by the second magic number AP 3. Instant death to beakie units, with no armor save. Nullifies FNP due to instant death. Also an ordnance weapon, so you roll 2d6 for armor pen, and take the highest dice. Sure they miss a lot, but if you have ever used a boom gun, and actually hit a beakie squad...it pretty much wipes the whole squad. I played a beakie player a few months ago, and I ran two boom guns. On turn 2, they both fired, and hit. Wiped out 400+ points of devastators and tactical squads, including his captain (failed invul save).
I always make sure to take some long range anti-tank shooting, and with Orks I feel the best choices are lootas, rokkit buggies, and big gunz kannons. Which one you take is up to you and your playstyle. They're all effective.
If only there were good models for the rokkit buggies and the kannons...
Garage sale toys + 1 Ork trukk kit + rokkits/missiles = 3+ Rokkit buggies
Imperial Guard Heavy Weapons Team + Grots = Big Gunz kannons
Oh, sure, I can bash something together. For that matter, I could find some wagon wheels and mate 'em to the kannons I've got left over from battlewagons, do something on that score. I'm just wishing there was a nice official kit instead of the lousy official ones.
Its true, the current buggies are pathetic. I recommend converting warbikes into rokkit buggies. Take rokkits left over from deff/kan boxes and/or nob kombi rokkits and strap them on the sides instead of the dakka guns. Now you've got some cool dakka guns to strap on to other stuff. They make good big shootas/lootas when converted on to shoota boys
