Welcome to Librarium Online!
Decided to make a comeback to Warhammer 40k, played the game MANY years ago and fielded a Tau and IG Army back in those days, ALOT has changed it seems, think I'm 3 Rule Books behind haha.
During those sleepless nights, I was tossing and turning between the idea of a Tyranid or Necron Army, and think I have finally settled down on the idea of Tyranids. I've always been interested in the look of their units, and the colour schemes I could apply to them - not to mention they're ALIENS haha.
However, that is were the extent of my knowledge ends - I have not even had a chance to pickup the new Tyranid Codex but am aiming to do that this weekend. Also heard the Tyranid Battleforce is horrid so not sure where I should start as that was going to be my first purchase also.
I would like to be able to field a semi-decent Army that allows me pop along to Games Workshop on 'Tourney' nights and vs a few players casual; so I guess in that sense as generic as possible while still providing me with possible upgrades/attack plans for specific things (I know, doesn't help you help me at all lol).
I've read over a number of topics here and found the Tyranid Army Builder thread which I will post in later if nothing is brought up in here. Other than that, I have been suggested by verteran Tyranid players that to avoid purchasing the wrong units, or modeling incorrectly, to have an Army list pre-built.
Thus why I'm here, to get a Army list built, but also look for any pointers/suggestions for a completely new comer to Tyranids .
Welcome back then!
First thing first. You need a point level. Most of the Nid lists can be built up around a basic core list, so lets work at a 500 point list.
HQ: Two options, either the Tyranid Prime or the Tervigon. Both are fun to use, but if you are building it for a core list go with the tervigon as in higher points nobody uses primes.
Elites: I would take 2 hive guards, purely to destroy any anti-tank that occurs, and in EVERY list I take at least 2-5 including 2500 point ones.
Troops: So, you need yourself some hormagaunts, they are a nice basis troop unit that can do loads of damage.
Heavy Support: At this point level dont worry about it, but consider getting yourself a Trygon Prime or biovores. Depending on your style.
So with that we got a list sort of like this:
Tervigon- Toxin sacs & catalyst
2x Hive Guards
20 Hormagaunts- Toxin sacs
This comes to 500 points exactly. It provides a stable and competitive list at that point cost, and has ALL the key units needed to expand to make bigger lists.
So from there, what to get? I would grab some genestealers, maybe some tyranid warriors, the two main units of these are runned as:
3x Tyranid Warriors - All with 2x bone swords
8x Genestealers- Broodlord with Talons
But just muck around, and you saw my list builder so feel free to post in there to.

Thanks so much for the reply Hive Fleet Macarbe!
I'll print out your proposed list and take it into my local GW tomorrow when I go to buy all my gear .
I also posted in your Army Builder - just waiting on approval apparently?
In regards to paints/tools/glues these days, still good to go with all Citadel stuff?
If any others have suggestions please dont hesitate!
If your a total newcomer to the bugs, I recogmend reading this little thread (well i would, i wrote it ) which outlines the basic things to consider with a nid list
Other than that, HFM surgested a pretty good list, if you post something yourself ill be sure to have a look!
Good luck returning to the game!!
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
Man i keep on relying to this thread only to get a, wait until a moderater approves it thing.... i wonder if ill get the same for this msg
ok ive tried about 3 times to post in this thread to give some advice but no joy, its probably cause i mention GW a few times, i hope just this msg gets thru tho... can't buy a tervigon, there is no official GW model for it.. that i know of anyways, you gotta use a proxie such as a carnifex or model your own... from said carnifex
