my local games shop is starting a doubles comp 2000 points each
was wondering who u think are the best allies to surport necrons,
i was thinking imperial guards as they give gd range and high ap weapons.
Can't speak for everything, but I recently did a team tournament by myself (there weren't enough players, so I played both armies) with IG and Necrons. It worked pretty well for me, the IG covered the biggest weakness of Necrons, anti-tank, while the resilience of my Necrons complemented my squishy guard. I had one game where I beat the pants off of a Space Wolves pair (lots of long fangs and terminators), because their Terminators just couldn't kill off my warriors, but the Terminators didn't take too well to massed Gauss fire. The simple rundown: they assaulted my warriors with their terminators, I yanked them out with my Monolith, then rapid fired them with 3 warrior squads. Dead Termies all around. I had a battle tank pounding away at their Long Fangs, but really, my Necrons were the stars of that match.
I ran a team with Nids and my Necrons, 1k each. And we steam rolled all opponents except one. Mainly he went all Genestealer awsome with rending and such, I went 10 destroyers and basic FOC. Essentially the Necrons gained their weakness which was CC. The team that beat us was an all mech Guard/Guard combo with about 24 vehicles....sick, just plain sick! Couldn't pen AV 12 on the chimeras and such. And his stealers outflanked and came in the wrong side, so walked right into a gun line...
Mainly the firepower from destroyers, and his CC focus really allowed us to close the Necron gap..shy of the 2k of guard mech...

I've played (and won) an 6500 pts Apocalypse match with Eldars as allies. Yes, it was definitely an unholy alliance if I ever saw one, but Eldars have power-weapons, close-combat squads and tank-busting weaponry to support our implacable advance with huge numbers of never-dying machines. It was fun and we kicked the combined IG/SM butt pretty totally.
Revenant Moon Necrons: (W/L/D) 0/1/0 (6th edition: 13/2/2)(5th edition: 14/6/4)(3rd edition Codex: 16/4/7)
XIX Legion: (W/L/D) 0/0/0 (5th edition: 14/12/2)(5th edition Codex: 4/3/0)
Black Legion: (W/L/D) 1/0/0 (6th edition: 2/3/0)
Something Wicked... Reikwald Beastmen: (W/L/D) 10/4/1
Basically most armies are good partners because they are all better at opening armour than we are. But some team tournaments will allow you to combine necron numbers for phase out if your partner is necron. I tried this once and it really didn't help. The real help is when you have a different army as your partner, and have them bring some heavy weapons, mainly ordnance.
Eldar -APOC- 6500 Points
Chaos Daemons -Fate Crusher- 3500 Points
Grey knights - 1000 Points
I generally don't find phase out to be that great of a problem. Give the warriors some decent def and Rez orb support and they never die. I personally have only phased out once when I had all of 10 warriors verus a dreadnoght + scout spam at 600pts
Theoretically it seems like BA would be great allies for necrons. Fast, heavy-hitting CC squads and decent armour/tank busting capabilities seems to fill most of our weaknesses.

There are very few armies that I would NOT want to be teamed with. If we get teamed with either good AP ranged allies or good CC allies, we are pretty unstoppable.
