Hey , I used to play Nids back about 5 years ago really enjoyed it but was never very competative and eventually I sold all my army and stopped playing 40k
Me and a few friends have just started playing again and it appears that nids is still the army for me.
As Im starting from scratch I want to make sure I pick up a good core foundation for any army. I picked up the codex and had a look but I realise that there arnt models for some of them ?
What I want to know is what you would suggest to buy if your starting again. All I have so far is a Battle force on its way. I dont mind converting to make some of the non model MC's etc but Ive goto have the parts to build off.
Can anyone suggest what I need to purchase for a good 1.5k list that would allow me to convert if needed etc and still give me a good foundation for 1k and 2k lists.
Looking so far im guessing a Tryon/mawloc, another battleforce, 3 zoanthropes, 3 hive guards, 2 biovores (I love these things), and a Hive Tyrant
Anything else suggested or changed ?
Firstly, hey dude welcome back to warhammer and welcome to the forums
secondly there was a recent post almost exactly the same as yours (asking advice on a core foundation to a nid army) In that thread (which should be on the first page somewhere i think its called new comer to tyranids) Hive Fleet Macarbe gives some 100% awesome advice (which he does all the time) and then Heirodule (also one to give awesome advice) gave a link to one of his best posts of the Do's and Don't for nids, which personally i think should be stickied and a must read for new and old players alike.
The only advice i can give on top of theirs is that you use proxies for units to test them out before you go out and buy them, of course this wont fly for official tournaments but if its just a friendly match use proxies for units to see if they fit your playing style before you go out and buy a bunch of stuff. Also i've heard it mentioned before but the battleforce isn't actually a good buy, i don't know the reasons off hand but i am sure a more experienced bro will give them
but if you have a burning need to buy something grab a tyrant and some hive guard, if your into modding the tyrant is hella fun to mess around with, i'm currently modding my 2nd edition tyrant into a swarmlord as for the hive guard... you can never have too many hive guard, you might not take them for every match but my dear god if you can find any better nid anti-tank for 50 points show me, i started out with 2, then got 4 then got 6 and as soon as i grab the cash i'm getting 9 so i can just fill my elite slots with them, mind you that would only be for 2000+ matches, i wouldn't fill so many slots with them for a 1500+ match, may 4-6 but defiantly buy 4 at least they aint the be all and end all of anit-tank but it wont be wasted money
anyways ill stop prattling on, i am sure number6, Heriodoule, jy2 or HFM will give you more sound advice or if your lucky mads might give you some advice... mads is awesome he made this flyrant, its the scourge of humanity and will surely be our doom
Hey thanks for the reply, I had a look at the other thread and noted what was needed, I think its more also getting a feel of what there isnt models for, whats recommended in getting out of these and how else to Mod my own to make them. For Example are Tervigons any good/ worth modding for their use etc and then as such what would I need to buy to convert one .
Ive got a bit of cash burning a hole in my pocket, its all for Nids, its just making sure I dont get allot of lesser used models and having a basis of a stong army to buy more for.
First thing first, make a list and post it here before buying. It'll save you a lot of hearthache and money later. If you're not sure how to build a list, you can post in the Tyranid List Builder section and we will help come up with a list for you.
You should think about what type of style you want to play. Fast nids? Shooty nids? Assault nids? Big nids? Swarm nids? Reserves nids? I can tell you now that a balanced nid army needs elements from almost all those types, and especially with shooting. You cannot have a balanced nid army WITHOUT shooting.
The battle box is okay, but depending on your list, you may find extra units leftover that you will not be using for your list. You can still try out those units, or you can save some money by just getting what you need for your list.
My HQ of choice is the Hive Tyrant. He is very versatile and buffs up the army. Just be sure to magnetize the arms so that you can swap out its weapons and experiment with different setups. I would also give him 1 tyrant guards unless you intend to give him wings.
For elites, hive guards are a must-have. You can't go wrong by buying hive guards.
For troops, I always take a tervigon and 1 unit of termagants. After that, then feel free to try out other troop choices. There are no tervigon models, but most people convert them from the carnifex kits.
Everything else is dependent on your list.
One thing I would say is that the Carnifex kit is very, very useful. With it, you can make a carnifex or convert it to a tervigon, tyrannofex and harpy (after adding a little extras parts). You cannot go wrong with that kit.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2

Welcome back then!
First thing first. You need a solid type basis to build on. Most of the Nid lists can be built up around a basic core list, so lets work at a 500 point list.
HQ: Two options, either the Tyranid Prime or the Tervigon. Both are fun to use, but if you are building it for a core list go with the tervigon as in higher points nobody uses primes.
Elites: I would take 2 hive guards, purely to destroy any anti-tank that occurs, and in EVERY list I take at least 2-5 including 2500 point ones.
Troops: So, you need yourself some hormagaunts, they are a nice basis troop unit that can do loads of damage.
Heavy Support: At this point level dont worry about it, but consider getting yourself a Trygon Prime or biovores. Depending on your style.
So with that we got a list sort of like this:
Tervigon- Toxin sacs & catalyst
2x Hive Guards
20 Hormagaunts- Toxin sacs
This comes to 500 points exactly. It provides a stable and competitive list at that point cost, and has ALL the key units needed to expand to make bigger lists.
So from there, what to get? I would grab some genestealers, maybe some tyranid warriors, the two main units of these are runned as:
3x Tyranid Warriors - All with 2x bone swords
8x Genestealers- Broodlord with Talons
But just muck around, the link above leads to the list builder. But it is VERY important that you proxy models before buying, or if you want to magnetize all your larger models.
That's a great reply to all 'Nid starters, Macarbe, though I missed it the first time around; heck, that's a 500 point list I'll probably use myself! Definitely worth a rep!
Also, pay no attention to gullgotha, the flyrant I crafted was a creature of great magnificence and beauty.

You can pretty much convert the Tervigon, Tfex, and harpy with either the carnifex or trygon kit. You can also try kit bashing multiple kits together. For example, I combined a lizardman stegadon together with a carnifex to make my tervigon, and it looks pretty close to the picter in the book. Also the new goblin spider thing looks like it might be pretty awesome for some converting. If your not too sure about how to build the stuff just look around google images and youtube for some ideas. People post there stuff all the time and on youtube even explain how they did it.
Thanks Mads. I got that copied to a notepad file for when these posts come up And yeh, that 500 point list works well. Got me a fair share of wins
I might get around to making a beginners guide, since all of our ones are outdated. Might ask Heirodule if i can include his do and dont thread info in there etc.
And thanks gull, always makes a poster happy knowing his work is noticed
P.S You slack nid players not participating in the votewar! Its me and Heirodule representing the nids. Thats 2 lonely hive fleets vs lots of tanks.
I don't even know what the votewar is.
Yes what is this votewar thing, i only really venture into this fourm, the armylist sub-fourm and the painting one.... explain now and in great detail!
