Hey guys, I have been jamming some 40k with some friends of mine (we play around 750 points at the moment). And I am having issues with a buddy that plays Space wolves. It seems like no matter what I am always on the losing end of the battle.
I typically use:
3 mobs of 20 boyz armed with shootas, 2 big shootas, + nob w/pk and bp
Warboss with PK, bp, cybork, and 'eavy armor
for the last bit of points i have been switching out 9 lootas and 3 deffkoptas (each kopta is a separate fast choice).
My opponent has been using squads of grey hunters, a rune priest, wolf guard in termy armor, and a 5 man squad of longfangs (with missle launchers).
Currently I don't have a whole lot of models for larger games (working on that but budget is tight at times )
I try to use cover as much as possible and multi-unit assaults but I always end up getting stomped. Any help would be appreciated.
Space Wolves are indeed a very tough fight for Orks, since they're one of the few Space Marine varieties that can actually stand up to Orks in close combat.
Are you outflanking with the deffkoptas? Do they have rokkits? You should do/use both. In any case, they might work better in a single unit instead of in 3 units of 1, that way it's harder for your opponent to take away kill points from you in annihilation games.
Some grots might also be nice, for sitting on an objective so your boyz can move forward, or for standing in front of your boyz, to give them all a cover save.
Is your opponent using rhinos? If so, then you need ways of cracking open those things. I'd try to use some more anti-vehicle shooting if this is the case. 2 units of lootas would do, or more deffkoptas.
Finally, try and gang up on him, with multiple units of boyz focusing on the same unit. No need to rush into close combat, since they have counter-charge. You might as well shoot at them. The best scenario would be shooting with everything at one unit, while keeping your units out of range of his other units (or at least behind cover).
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Have you tried running 2 mobz of 30 boyz each, rather than 3 @ 20? You are going to roll 50% more dice at your targets that way, and have 19 models to sacrefice in each and still be Fearless.
I would use the Deffkoptas to lock up units, keep them busy in CC until you can gang up or they destroy the koptas. Hit and Run will help if you can manage to beat the L7 roll.
Fire rockets, assault, stay in assault to keep from getting shot at... then H&R, fire rockets, assault... etc.
Run as many Lootas as you can. They will destroy tanks and termies, and attract the majority of the ranged attacks your opponent can dish out. He will want them DEAD.
Otherwise, get yourself some Noba with PK's and a Painboy. Throw ten of those in a trukk with the Warboss and run around ripping apart space pups until the trukk goes boom.
After that maybe some Kanz with grotzookas?
Cool, thx for the help guys.
I picked up a Big mek w/ kff today. Its cleaned up, glued, and now i am waiting for the primer to dry . Me and my bud should be playing sometime this weekend. I will report back as to how it went down. Thx again for the quick responses.
Big mek with KFF is a must - keep both units of 30 within range of it (only 1 model needs to be)
the deffkoptas should be used to hit the longfangs - they can only fire at 1 of these - if you get first turn fire rockets and then assult the longfangs to take them out of the picture or weaken them and stop them shooting.
And yes warboss is overkill in these games - keep to the nob.
