Welcome to Librarium Online!
I played a 500 points game yesterday for a change of pace, and think I could have won (it was a draw) if my army selection had been different.
I ran a Haemonculus (venom blade, stinger pistol) added to a 9-man Wyches squad with Hydra Gauntlets in a Raider, 10 Warriors with a splinter cannon in a Raider and a Talos Pain Engine with Chain flails. This gave me basically three units (until the troops disembarked). We rolled up Seize Ground with 5 objectives. With just two Troops choices, this was going to be difficult.
With so little to move around and shoot with, I quickly noticed how few options one has when playing with 500 points. Or, in other words, how few option I had due to my army selection.
It made me wonder: how would you play Dark Eldar in a 500 points game? Would you put more models on the table, forgo vehicles, or even take a more expensive HQ?
All input is appreciated.
Innovation suffuses this hobby like a tea bag in the boiling water of play.
I wont get into exact points, but for me it would probably be something like
Succubus with agonizer haywires,
2 wyche units with haywires in raiders with Hekatrix and Agonizers,
And probably some incubi with the Succubus in a raider.
Again, not getting into points but this would be the general guidlines for my 500pt list.
Altough I haven't tried a 500pts battle, I have considered it because I need a goal when painting and 500 pts would be the first pit stop. (I did play a battle of 750 pts though, the battle report is in that forum.) I've spent quite a lot of time thinking about it and these are some of my thoughts:
Two troop choices will have to be enough. The target will have to be to claim one with each troop and contest enough to prevent my opponent from claiming the same amount or more. The reasoning is that while our troop choices are generally nice, our more killy units lie in other choices. Lastly, your opponent will most likely be in the same position...
Squad sizes will need to be carefully considered. While it is nice to have large squads (my first army is CSM and with them I always take 10 in a squad) we can't afford to take 10 out of habit. It might be worth it for the warriors to get the heavy weapon while taking 10 wyches for the second wych weapon is probably not. All this to free up point for a killy unit.
I have yet to decide what killy unit to choose though.
I might try to put a small reaver unit in. Just so I can hide it most of the game and jump out of cover to contest something last turn or so.
I said try though. It might not be worth it because of how fragile it is
In response to unit sizes, I know someone who always seems to take 10 man squads of marines. He can use spacing rules to spread out and sometimes nab 2 objectives with one squad if they're close enough.
The reaver idea has some merit. Only problem is that even without upgrades it eats up 13,2% of your total points (if we're talking 500pts). Any surviving Raiders should/could be used this way though.
The spreading of a large unit to claim 2 objectives also holds merit. Marines have an advantage over dark eldar though, resilience. One or two dead dark eldar would be all it takes to make you choose which of the two objectives to hold. If you have the opportunity it's worth a shot though.
Iv been trying to think as to what would work well, I think 3 raiders with 10 men on, one of them with a heamy on one of the squads, giving decent numbers of shots, 3 capturing troops, 3 av targets and 3 dl's to deal with armour
Another option would be to use a ravager as they're so cheap for what you get, with that I'd take a heamy in wracks on raider, 15ish warriors on foot and a ravager
It is hard, but remember your opponent is in the same boat
Succubus with agoniser and haywire grenades
9 wyches with a wych weapon of choice and agoniser hekatrix
10 warriors wtih a blaster and splintercannon
500 on the head.
It has a bit of everything and the ravager acts as a nice counter to people who try to abuse low points with very tough units. The only problem is at this low level chimeras really hurt when taken en masse as you cannot get enough anti-tank in to take them on in a sensible manner.
Beyond that though, a list such as this can stop nearly anything else you are likely to face one way or another.

Interesting, that list is nearly identical to the first 500 points list I wrote. Only I hadcflickerfields for the vehicles instead of the blaster from the warriors and the haywire grenades from the succubus. I think I like yours better though. What about switching the wych weapon for flickerfield on one of the vehicles?
just had an interesting thought.. i think it might work in 500 pts games.. strangely.
like many DE lists in certain types of game we have to play to table the opponent (KP's is difficult for us) so that would be the goal i feel with this list,
heamy - 50
14x warrors + cannon - 136
razorwing jetfighter + ns - 155
razorwing jetfighter + ns - 155
the ns are there to keep the jetfighters out of 48" initial range of heavy weapon fire, they then unload all 8 pie plates on your (most likely not in a transport) opponent to remove their troops and infintry. and then each turn after use DL's to punch holes in any remaining armour.
i feel the razorwing offers a nice balance of anti infantry and anti tank in this list.
i know its only one troops, but sit them in cover with the FnP and they should be able to survive (16 wounds is quite a bit with a 4+ then 4+ save)
