Welcome to Librarium Online!
I love the concept of the doom, and he has done well for me in the couple proxy games Ive been playtesting my proposed army in.
Ive read the FAQ concerning his powers vs transports and whatnot, but I still have a question:
1. Spirit Leech is obviously not a psychic shooting attack, but is it a psychic power at all or just an ability since no psychic test is needed to perform it? (this is in regards to psychic defenses)
Also, in regards to just playing the Doom well:
2. Is dropping him in the middle of infantry enough? That seems obvious enough, but I wondered if anyone has particular tricks/tactics for using him to his fullest potential.

No its not a psychic test, and cant be shut down.
As for tactics, i like to use him as a killer of those annoying back of the board squads. You know the ones, long fangs, lootas, heavy weapons teams, all those squads that are kinda hard to get at.
Drop him in, suck the soul, then nuke something with cataclysm. Works like a charm, if you can manouver round any cover.
Another tactic thats kinda nice is parking him next to a squad thats about to unleash hell against one of your prioritory units. For example, that Wolf guard termie squad about to assault your poor old hive tyrant? Bring doom in. They either have to run away to avoid being soul sucked, or they go in and lose several before the assault. Same deal with ranged units, like chosen, or crisis suits.
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
The doom is fantastic. Its only psychic power is cataclysm.
Drop, suck souls, nuke the biggest baddest unit out there.
For example, last week I dropped my Doom against a tau opponent. Managed to siphon 16 wounds from 4 squads, then used cataclysm on a 3 man broadside unit with drones, which lost 2 broadsides and a drone, then proceeded to run off the board. I followed up by moving him back within range of even more units, including his commander(he had no where to run, I dropped a hive tyrant, two trygon primes, zoanthropes, with 3 units of stealers outflanking. Needless to say, the tau were no longer on the board after turn 4 and the doom did the most damage, amazingly destroying 25+ models and a massive broadside unit.
In my previous game, I dropped the Doom, sucked most of the souls in a devastator squad and a tactical squad, then proceeded to nuke a vindicator with a S10 AP1 large blast.
It also has the added bonus that when you start using spirit leech you get to chant I'll swallow your soul, I'll swallow your soul. That's always fun, especially against Dark Eldar who think they're the only army into soul-swallowing.
I cracked up at this. Also, do you get cover saves from spirit leech? I vaguely recall that being in the FAQ.It also has the added bonus that when you start using spirit leech you get to chant I'll swallow your soul, I'll swallow your soul. Overall I think that even if people get cover saves that the Doom is very good for what you get. Use it to surprise and keep an enemy busy while the rest of your swarm gets to work. Also keep an eye out for low LD types like DE Grotesques, they will die easy when it goes for them.
One question I have about spirit leech is do units get to use the LD of an independent character with them or do they use their own LD. The LD bonus that characters provide seems to be only for morale tests but I'm not sure and spirit leech isn't a morale test.
