Is it worth it to put invulnerable saves on your Shas'o/Shas'el, or take the TA for the ballistic skill?
Take your Shas'el, give him a multi-tracker. If you want you can give him a hardwired multi-tracker and a target array but he is already BS4. The shield generator is not needed since you can take two shield drones and have more models which means more wounds.
Like Serran implied, keep your commander cheap: an 'el, not an 'o. And keep the kit basic. For more protection, either buy drones for the commander or stick him in an Elites unit of XV8s. Or both.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I never use the O and I never use shield gens or Drones. I always take the following:
I take one in a unit with bodyguards (BS4 multi Fireknives) and a monat. There is no real reason to take a gen or Drones because XV8's should always aim to work at range unless they are built to work close (Flamer squads and even then they should be working at range with missile pod until the enemy gets close). Even is used at rapid fire range the XV8 is usually pretty safe at nearly 18 inches away after JSJ moves. You should always aim to have the Shas'El end the Tau phase in cover or behind vehicles out of LOS, at the very least you should have them behind other less valuable Tau units (kroot etc) to get cover saves.
With the XV8's mobility and the preponderance of cover saves available in 5th it should be no problem to avoid return fire.
Now to the question of BS. Yes BS4 is OK but BS5 is better, with Tau you need to do one thing and one thing above everything else and that is cause damage. Strength of weaponry is important as is decent AP and so is range but it all means nothing if you cannot hit the target then you may as well give up. BS5 means a near guaranteed hit and that is the most important thing in the entire shooting phase, like I said if you don't hit then all the rest is irrelevant.
Drones are fine but they are not cheap and I would rather spend points on ensuring as many hits as possible in the first two turns because the more damage you cause the less you get back in return and the less you get back the less need there is for things like sacrificial Drones.
OK I see ya'lls point. The drones brings up another question though, If he is with the drones that makes him a unit with the drones right' as in he can't use his IC status to join a unit of elite fireknives or deathrains as he is with the drones?
Also thank ya'll for the responses
Actually they are wargear... it specifically states in the drone sub-tab thingy that a character with drones may still join another unit.
OK thanks I just kinda skimmed over the drone part. Thanks again for the replies
Mine cost about the same...but I take two of them with MP/PR/FB and HWMT, then put them each into an elites unit consisting of one fireknife and one helios each for ultimate versatility, since I can shoot (max six weapons, of course) up to two missile pods, up to two fusion blasters, up to three plasma rifles, as the situation warrants... I can have the unit act as 2x fireknife and 1x helios, 2x helios and 1x fireknife, or 1x each of helios, fireknife, and fireforge, as the situation requires. Sure, against deepstriking terminators on turn two, it's less effective than a helios team, and sure, against a rhino on turn one, it's less effective than a fireknife team...but if I'm shooting at rhinos on turn one, then terminators deepstrike 5" from me on turn two, this complex configuration is more effective overall than a "pure" team of either variety. Also, since I have to take an 'El anyway, substituting him for a team leader, and still keeping a 3-man team, saves some points to be used elsewhere in the list (and the extra points cost to "upgrade" from elite team leader to HQ 'El is well worth it for the BS, wound, etc). Sure, a 4-man team is better than a 3-man team, but I'm not convinced that it's better enough to justify the cost, although two 3-weapon suits and one helios and fireknife each sounds lovely at higher points, since it gives you the choice of :
1. 3x fireknife and 1x helios
2. 3x helios and 1x fireknife
3. 2x fireforge, 1x helios, and 1x fireknife

3 weapon XV8's are a waste of time. You inevitably end up not using one of the weapons and BS4 means you miss more. I would rather have a Fireknife or Helios with Multi and TA and have the BS5 and two weapons. Ever heard of the saying "jack of all trades, master of none" well that applies to the 3 weapon XV8. XV8's should be built for a roll because building it to handle all comers always results in less efficiency. Fireknives are great at BS5 with Multi's, they are made for harassing at long range anti armour and mid range tough unit killing while BS5 multi Helios are close ranged high AV vehicle killers and close range tough target killers. The two do not mix.
Do the math and over a game the Missile pod for instance will hit with two more shots and that can make all the difference, the same goes for the Plasma at rapid fire range. Put simply I would rather have the two extra hits than the possibility I might get to use the Fusion once for example. If I use my Fireknife at BS5 at rapid fire range I hit with 3.33r shots, if I have your jack of all trades I either get 2.66 hits with the Pl/MP or 2 with the Helios, sorry i would rather have the hits because you cant do anything with misses.
I know you will come back with a lot of "but the three weapons gives me versatility" arguments but sorry I have used em in the past and discarded em because I do not like wasting points on three weapons when I know I will inevitably end up not getting the use from one of them. I spend the points on efficient stuff I get use out of.
OK just another quick question to clear up some of my confusion. If you take the twin-linked missile pod do you get two shots or four with them?
Also when taking the elite crisis suits is it better to take 2x fireknives and 2x deathrains, or 2 units of 1 fireknife and 1 deathrain?
