Hi, I'm considering getting an Ork army in the near future as I want a change from my other elite like armies and it would be nice to field at least 60 models into 1500pts, not something small like 40. I don't really know what kind of army I want to do, all I know is I love lootas, nobz and flash gitz. I either want to do a horde army with no vehicles what so ever, just a load of foot slogin', maybe led by Ghazgull, but I do like the looks of a speed freaks army full of trucks and warbikes, also I noticed that having a big mek lets you take a deff dread as troops so i think that would be cool to do a mech ork army with lots of killa kans, has anyone ever tried a deff dread and killa kan list? It would be cool to hear if it works or not. So if anyones got any advice on the best things to get for either of the three type of armies I mentioned that would be great to help me decide kind of army I want.
Hey scilent, you have a pretty general idea of an Ork army that you wanna build which is fine! Have you picked up the Codex yet and looked around? As you said you have other armies I'm sure that you have at least seen some parts of Ork's. You basically hit the three most common types of army lists for orks.
Horde - Foot slogging mass greenskins, with some firepower to back them up, usually lootaz seems to be a favorite or deffkoptas.
Speed Freak - Mass vehicles, charge forward and smash into the lines. Has trukks and Battlewagons galore.
Kan Wall - Maxes out on Killa Kans and Deff Dreads, uses them as a brick wall to give cover to the boys following up behind the wall.
You can mix and match all you want between those lists, but those are the three most common things you'll see and all are fairly competitive. So until you figure out which one you are most interested in building their is a few things that you must have for Orks. Boyz, boyz, and more boyz that's usually where you want to start your army. Most will recommend AoBR box set as it's cheap and comes with a good amount of Orks. You can look on e-bay and get a ton of boyz for real cheap from these box sets. However there is limited amount of options of what you can do with these orks (can't make them into shootas, unless you convert them). If your unsure of what way you want to go just get some boyz off of e-bay, and proxy everything else until you figure out what list you would like to build! Hope this helps, i'm sure others will chime in with better advice then myself
I have had a look through the codex and know some basic rules for characters, weapons, equipment etc. I'm gonna have a scan through some of the army lists that have been posted cause I think that'll help me get a good idea of what people prefer to use and if theres any tacticas on here I wanna have a look through them, I should be getting the book soon though.
KFF Big Mek
As many units of 30 Boys Nob Bosspole Power Claw you can find
A Unit of Nobs with Painboy and Cyborg bodies with some Klaws
Get your Waaagh! on
Boyz. Lots of Boyz. After that decide if you want to go mech or not. Horde is cheaper to build imo. Unless you are putting everything in super upgraded battle wagons.

I've finally got the codex so I'm gonna put up a list in a bit
Grats! If I were to recommend some units that most lists should include it would be,
-Kff mech -use that force feild in mech lists/green tide lists/kanwall lists which are the most common types
-Boys- You should always have lots of boys as your primary strategy is to outnumber your opponent
-Lootas, they aren't manditory, but they are one of the best models we get. And while I have fielded lists without them, I always am happy when I have them included. 15 pts for 1-3 str 7 shots from 48" away. Thats a bargain even with the bs 2!
