I've wanted to get into wargaming for a long time, and recently began collecting my first army. I chose DE for the reason that it is, from what i've read on here and other forums, the most difficult for new players, and because after reading all of the fluff in the codex, I became obsessed with how the dark eldar play, and who they are. So far for the dark eldar I have ordered a pack of warriors, hellions, and lelith hesperex for when I start gathering my wyches. I want to make a heavy close combat army, but i thought some warriors would definitely be needed first. My brother, who wants to play Space Marines (I'm 19 and he's 16), and I have also ordered the assault on battle reach kit so we can learn to play, and i can get practice painting before I begin painting my precious DE.
After reading through multiple threads, I'd like any advice anyone could give, and the more opinions the better. I would particularly like to know how people feel about hellions, as raider protection as well as offense, and how people feel about webway portals. Any other tips, tricks, or advice would also be helpful
For Hellions: easily my favorite model in appearance. I would love nothing more then running a Hellion cult army. Good CC not bad ranged, nothing in the way of anti-armor. At least wyches have haywire grenades.
As for protecting things, other infantry sized models will get cover from Hellions, but for vehicles at least 50% has to be obscured so... Probably not going to happen.
Even though it wouldn't be very competitive, a Hellion, reaver, and razorwing army might be fun to play.
Hellions can definitely put out a torrent of fire, especially in large squads. Space Marines and even terminators will fail armour saves if they have to take enough. The hellions aren't bad ob the charge either, even better with a pain token. With practice you can do well with them. Most of all have a great time learning the hobby. You might consider tossing in either the Baron or the Duke and converting up your own sexy count-as version of him. It seems like the sort of dark eldar you are going for could benefit greatly from one of those two. Also, welcome! ^_^

How affective is the Hit and Run ability? obviously the baron helps, but do you all find it effective? I really want to utilize it as much as possible
And would you recommend raiders for getting wyches and things into CC, or webway portals? I want a fast CC army
most of the people who I know i'll be playing against will be IG, SM, or nids
Hit and run can be amazing. When combat ends on the other players turn you run and then you are able to shoot who you were just in combat with and then assault them and get your bonus attacks again. It makes for much more brutal unit.
Playing against nids can be difficult. DE have a big advantage against monstrous creatures because of poisoned shooting. T6 makes them hard to kill for anyone in CC, but at range we win. On the opposite end, your lance weapons will have to cause 6 wounds. Not an easy task if you are heavy AT and light on anti-infantry firepower.
