Welcome to Librarium Online!
I was just reading the ork dex and it mentioned the feral orks, basically orks that grew up as orphans.
But there was an article earlier on how oddboyz have their knowledge built in.
So how come feral orks are all spears and axes when the mekboy amongst them are like
OY! IF OY TOOK DAT STEEK DER AND DAT STONE AND SUM PIGEONS..... OMG SHOOTA!
Feral Orks are a great opportunity for conversions, especially with all the new savage orc models coming out. They used to have rules, but they're now defunct. However, this doesn't mean you can't use the models for conversions or "counts as".
I'm currently working on some feral ork boyz using the new savage orc models. I'll be counting them as slugga boyz and using the Wurzzag model to count as their nob. The fluff behind it is that a feral ork shaman is held in high esteem by other feral boyz and thus he acts as their nob. His psycher powers account for him being stronger and tougher, using orky magics to fill himself with Waaagh! energy and destroy enemies in close combat. Similar to the Grey Knight's Hammerhand, if you will. Its a bit of a diversion from the fluff, where psychic orks are usually unpredictable and shunned, but in feral culture it makes sense that they'd be respected. Friendly gamers will hopefully enjoy the conversions. I'll be doing the warpaint in glow-paint so they'll light up in the dark, hurr hurr, as well as converting a big boar-drawn chariot that'll count as a battle wagon.
In the fluff, feral boyz would have mek boyz, but those mek boyz haven't yet acquired any supplies or equipment to start building weapons. They'd probably help out by making crude warmachines and such, like those orcs of the fantasy world. When they've got enough resources, they'll stop being feral and give up the old ways. As far as a shoota goes, you could probably use savage orc archers as shoota boyz, if you're in a friendly game. However, I'm using them as slugga boyz because I like the hand weapons better.
I think Feral Orks are supposed to be like the early stage in Orky development and they do evolve into "propa" Orks. So sooner or later they are like OMG Shoota!
Like Seanchadith said, the Mek does need time to acquire the raw materials. I would imagine he would need time to hone his skills aswell. Like maybe he would start with sword, then chainsword, then powerklaw, shoota and so on. After tinkering about maybe he could do a SAG. Like a kid must crawl before it walks.
Plus I would like to think some savage feral Orks would just stone the first guy who started using tools and stuff for being unorky.
Oh I see, I always thought that mek boyz had shootas and related blueprints embedded into their minds. So like when they close their eyes they see ammo belts and barrels and stuff.
And yeah I do remember reading a feral ork codex a while ago. Looked like fantasy orks that got sucked through the warp and ploped into a 40k environment.
Its more like all 40k orks start out as fantasy orcs and then advance technology with time. If the fantasy world had the right materials and technology, the orcs could well become orks. Feral orks will get there eventually, but until then they'll enjoy krumpin' with rocks and bones!
