Welcome to Librarium Online!
So I just picked up a Ork battle force on a whim today. Now while I do have the codex I havent really looked at it that much. Now I'm wondering is it worth spending points on shootas? BS 2 really kind of a downer from what I'm used to, and not sure loosing the 2nd CCW is worth it in my mind, just to feel the air with bullets. If someone who knows any more about Orks, which Im sure is just about everyone here, would help me out with this conundrum I would appreciate it.
Oh and before I hit submit, on a small game are 3 Nob bikerz going to do much?
Sup man, I just started orks too about a week ago. Had AOBR ork set sitting there for a while though and just got like 80 aobr orks off ebay as well as 20 AOBR warbosses (great MANZ conversion for 1$ a piece heh)
I always saw other ork players at my club and game stores use slugga + choppa since that seemed most orky but after reading a whole bunch of threads and stoof on it, I'll probably always take shootas unless I'm running a mob of 12 in a trukk. There are alot of threads that did the mathammer but basically with 30 boyz, you get 58 bolter shots at BS2. Considering that (my main army was CSM) my chaos marines got like 8 BS4 shots per squad on average, I think this is pretty damn good. 58 shots man. 58. with 18" range + 6" move. 58 shots. let that sit on your tongue there for a second. 58. awww yeah....
Also the biggest thing that persuaded me to take shootas on all footsloggers (or even in a mob of 20 in battlewagon) was when someone wrote (here in a random librarium thread) "shooting happens alot more than assualting." Possibly by that guy who's making a thread to diss every single ork unit there is. The way I see it is if you can get at least 2 rounds of shooting in, you'll have made back your loss in close combat. Also, I've never had a footsloggin mob be at full strength by the time they march across the board anyway further reducing the slugga's value.
As for nob bikzers, they seem to be pretty bad on paper if you run them in low squads. Considering you always get a painboy, that basically costs you 10pts a model at a squad of 3 compared to only 3/model at a squad of 10. I wouldn't use them if they weren't at least 6 strong imo. But then I've only used CSM bikers so what do I know?
Terranarc hits on some key points. Shoota boyz are generally considered better by seasoned ork players, for their great massed shooting and greater threat range. They still kick enough butt in combat to be worth it, especially with the mandatory powerklaw nob. However, either sluggas or choppas work wonders in huge masses of 30. I use mostly sluggas, though I do have one unit of shoota boyz. I like the models more, as there are a ton of interchangable choppa arms within the ork and orc ranges. They also seem to fit the Goff fluff better. Either will work- pick the one you like better, and go with it! And besides, you'll need several mobz of boyz, so you can always try out a mob of each and go from there as you add on!
Its a toss up. Statistically Shootas are SLIGHTLY better. However aint much walking away from a full (or near full) squad of Slugga boyz in the assault and there is no difference in survivabilty. Just go with what you think is coolest.
Ya, so for now I have both. That battle force lies to you. Get about 22 Orks, was even able to make a Warboss out of it. But I fit half with shootas with a Nob with a big choppa for when/if they get into assault. The others made up as 'ard boyz, with a Nob with a PK, and stick them in a Trukk with the boss and rush them into combat with the Warboss. Ill for sure be adding on, so far these have been the most fun to put together and have so many options with the spare Marine, Eldar, and Tau bitz and vehicles laying around.
Gotta love the spare bits, nothing like some severed heads and stuff to add to the flavor! I'd recommend replacing your nob's big choppa with a powerklaw if hes leading a unit of boyz. This is gospel for ork players. It makes a huge difference against so many opponents, like terminators and vehicles. Highly recommended. You could use your current big choppa nob by adding him to a unit of nobz and then make a new nob with pk to lead your boyz.
The main secret behind playing Orks is a single word: VOLUME
Who cares if you have BS2 when you have 60 shots that are just as good (and arguably better) than marine bolters?
Orks are also fast, tough, and great in close combat, but above all in order to win they usually have to bring 'more' of everything to the fight. More shots, more close combat attacks, more attacks that ignore armor saves, and more bodies. Also, a Big Mek w/Kustom Force Field is a must have.

"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
I had another quick Q&A. What is the difference physically between a Deffdread and a Kan? I have a Old SM dread that I'm tearing up and patching together again, but Im not sure if it will be be big enough from a model stand point to look imposing, and what about the base size?
