Well, I've been working alot on my Orks recently, and I really like the background and attitude of the Free-Booters, Orky Pirates just seems like a nice hybrid.
Basically, I was just contemplating what choices would fit them best? They get paid for their work, with which they buy lots of new shiny gubbins, or make things more shooty, so what would the most logical choices be?
I think a squad of Flash Gitz would be manditory
using 5-8 with more dakka, shootier, painboy and Capn' Badruk in place of the warboss and nobs found in most competative forces [with respective transport] is a good start... well shooty and well fighty!... just no PK's
I think a squad of 'ard boyz, lootas meet the freebootaz theme... maybe a squad of pirate grotz. That would be fun to convert [there are already some from GW here http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/ca...Id=prod1810008]
I would have to agree with Davidian, I think Flashgitz and Lootas are good choices. Maybe some Big Guns too, Pirates have kannons! Obviously Flashgitz and Big Gunz are not the most competetive choices but you did say "Semi competetive" as oppossed to uber competetive.
Also, you might want to check out Maxmini, they do some awesome pirate heads:
Pirate Orc Heads - €4.80 : MaxMini.eu, Resin bases & gaming accessories. Online Store!
Pirate Orc Boys Heads (10) - €5.65 : MaxMini.eu, Resin bases & gaming accessories. Online Store!
I have seen great tutorial for greenstuff pirate hats aswell but I cannot remember where it is for the life of me.
Hope this helps.
Great find with those pirate heads, Shinglepants! Have you tried them out? I'm wondering if they're boy-sized or nob-sized. They'd go great for some flash gitz conversions if they fit on nob bodies, but they'll look silly if they're too small.
As for the topic, some pirated-out meganobz would fit with the army. Freebooters are wealthy so it makes sense that they'd have fancy armor. A resident Mek who they're paying a handsome salary of teef would also fit. Perhaps a kannon that is converted to look like an actual pirate cannon? An empire cannon could work.
I have indeed tried them out. The ones that come in a pack of 5 are Nob size and the 10 pack are Boyz size.
Thanks, Pirate Grots do seem cool, some of the grots from the plastic box only need a green-stuff'd hat to make them complete, the one with the 2 blastas and face mask especially.

And some could just have bandanas, that seems to go with the theme. Sure, I may have to replace the heads of my AOBR Orks with Pirate heads, but money well spent, I've only painted the warboss so far for them, and he could do with a hat =) Lootas seem to be pretty competetive too, I'll give them a whirl, see how it goes. Would Warbikes/Warbuggies fit in at all, I have some Warbikes that I've used Guardsman flame tanks to look like nitrous cans on their bikes, maybe they got them fixed by the mek? What is the usual competetive Nob setup, out of interest.
Also thanks to Shinglepants, those heads are awesome! Do you reckon the Nob head with Iron Gob would fit on a Meganob? Also for Flash Gitz, I'd start with getting the Nobz box and then starting work from there, any recommendations about how much is too much when it comes to converting snazzguns?
I just realised that this whole force gives me an excuse to use many Battlewagons!!! =D
Also, If it's of any interest to anyone, I found the Green-Stuff hats tutorial. It also tells you how to make frock-coats too! =)
