Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been looking looking over standard army lists and tinkering around with my own. Raider spam appears to be quite popular, but I've been looking into venom spamming. The limitations are that you lose a few dark lances and the capacity to move around squads greater than 5. However, multiple small units provides greater flexibility as well as the heavy anti-infantry capabilities of a venom's splinter cannons.
I'm just curious as to whether anyone has actually tried using 5 man venom squads over standard raider 10 man squads. Sure you the squads and small and fragile but it frees up a lot of points to use on our expensive fast attack choices. Its much easier to find the points for reavers or scourges which in turn can be equipped with anti-vehicle weapons to make up for the dark lance losses.
I just wanted to add that my motivation for reducing my raider numbers is largely due to the fragile/oddly shaped models, which are an incredible pain to transport/cut foam for
Tau my love! You are back!
I will say that I love venoms, both for toting blaster trueborn into 18 in range or for splinter cannon trueborn for that 24 shot gun platform.
But I can say that Mech MSU is not a great DE tactic. Yes, 5 wyches With hekatrix and special weapon will beat 5 marines in CC most of the time. But I've been running into a lot of marines in 10 man squads. And I wouldn't rely on 5 wyches for that.
Also, 8 or 9 wyches with the right equip can engage (evenly) elite squads of 5, but I wouldn't trust 5 wyches to do it.
Warriors and trueborn should never be in CC anyway. Unless they're supporting something of trying to just put hits on a commander or something (they still have decent I)
Yes, I understand that, but you're paying a premium to do the same thing. 2 venoms with 8 wyches, 2 hekatrix, 2 Wych weapons and 2 agoizers is very pricy.
But agonizers are why we take wych squads... Anywho MSU wyches I don't see working to well. I prefer 9 in a raider with a haemy, leave the haemy in the raider, and go kill something with FNP. Blaster squads however, are where its at! We can pump out 22 splinter shots with 10 man squad with blaster and splinter cannon in a raider, and 2 dark matter shots for 185 points at rapid fire range, 11 outside of it. With a venom mounted blaster squad with 2 SC, we get 20 splinter shots and 1 dark matter shot in rapid fire range for 125 points, and 16 outside. So for every 2 raider warrior squads you convert to a blaster squad, you essentially get another blaster squad in venoms. Its an obvious choice to go MSU style warrior squads, hereafter known as the blaster squad. They are more points efficient by far and you don't really even miss out on splinter shots. Yes theoreticly you are more fragile but if that is a consideration well... maybe this isn't the right army for you. We will die if we don't kill, it really is that simple. MSU style shooty squads lets us get the good bits cheaper, and more of them. Leave ablative wounds for marines.
*Note raiders have flickerfields in these point values.
Edit: Oh, and as far as loosing dark matter shots goes. 2 raider squads is 4 shots for 370 points, that wastes all of your splinter shots. For 375 points we get 3, and a large volley of splinter shots that can actually shoot at infantry...
