Welcome to Librarium Online!
hey guys im going to do something that no1 else has donw...give good comments to spores!!!
ok most people think waste of time and points, useless, stupid and underate them completely
but im here to tell you they rock!!
ok so lets talk about them
they r 10pts which is pretty good if you ask me, they come in units of 6 but i like to keep em as 5. they deep strike into play and dont count as kill points or hold objectives. there statline is the worst in 40k and a snotling could kill em no trouble.
ok now the good stuff!
whenthe r on the board, they all count as an individual unit, yes! that means if your opponent makes the mistake of shootin them, they pretty much wasted a round of shooting. they move in all different directions which sometimes can be a pain but is awesome when they go the right way. at the end of their movement if they r withen 2 inches of an enemy(both players turns) they explode causing a large template str4 ap4 hit on everything around it. so if it hit nicely then its made its points back easily.
ive been using them with my competitive lists at my local gws and i have to say they work wonders! i vsed and ork army in capture n control(3obj) and so i deep striked them at the lootas on their home objective killing a whole lot of em and making em run off the board and then dropped another 5spore unit in the middle. they all ended up getting in his way and blowing up in his footslogger faces which waS halerious. then he got smart and moved a suicide ork(nob, last of his unitXD) and blew himself up. by end game they caused just over 180pts worth of damage and they costed 100pts in total which is good.
if you use em make sure to throw em where it will piss your opponent off and screw there plans up. and also watch out for the smart ass who uses a rhino to end its turn in range and waste a spore, lol only 1 tho. i dont think any1 other then me wil use em for competative but hopefully people might use em when their biovore shots dont hit home.
comeon guys give em a chance!
Yes I have used them and they are a "blast" to play with
I also run them in 5's whenever I use them- they are fun to use as terror tactics to where your opponent deploys his stuff.

I've always liked the idea of taking a group of 3 to fill out my fast-attack slots and use some leftover points when I don't have the models to beef up any more of my units. The main reason to take them is not the damage they actually do, sure they have potential but most of the time I don't think they will make their points back. But they do help you control where the enemy will move and deploy. Fill the middle of the table with spores and I doubt the enemy will be going anywhere near there. Thus making your outflanking gribblies that much more likely to reach en enemy when they show up.
EDIT: Yep i was right. Look at page 48 under orbital deployment. "Spore mine clusters are ALWAYS deployed in the following manner. After both sides have selected their deployment zone, but before any units are deployed, all of your spore mine clusters deep strike onto the board."
And this means they fall foul of the exact trick you describe. You deep strike them in, then all the opponent has to do is place a rhino nearby and detonate the entire spore cluster. They'll never find anything to attack, since all they have to do to be totally neautralised is have a tank deploy next to them. Very simple, and totally effective.
Also testing them against an Ork list is hardly proof that they work well. With all due respect a weapon designed to slaughter light to light/medium infantry is always going to do well against light infantry. Try them against an MEQ list and youll find markedlym different results.
Sorry to burst the bubble of such a possetive post, but im afraid spores simply dont work that way and actually do suck. If you want the same effect, get yourself some biovores. They do the same thing, but actually work. Unlike spores. Sorry man.

Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
Yes he is playing them wrong and that is why they are so affective but i agree they have their place.
Against mech they are useless but against horde they are great. I like the way you put them (must be done before the game starts and any units have hit the field) in the middle to get in his way.
The best way i have seen them used is in bigger games
We played a 3K a side and it was spearhead. my teammate (1.5K an army) placed his spores in the enemies deployment zone reducing his room even more and garentying a hit when they moved first turn. Worked great.
However he also wanted to use them against me in a 5K a side game. Even tho it was pitched battle this time with orks as half my side it still took away a lot of deployment area.
