Welcome to Librarium Online!
While trolling ebay I found:
2 ripper swarms
With some easy conversions(slave collars, etc), these could be made into convincing khymerae and razorwing flocks.
Now I'm off to find a cheap carnifex or two to convert into a talos...
Take a look at my modeling, painting, and terrain blog
The Iron Cage
In 40k tournaments is it legal to use converted models instead of the ones GW sells?
I am considering doing this to make a beasty unit as well, but I need to know if tournaments will allow those models.
Anyone know a thing or two about this?

This is up to the Tournament Organizer (TO) so can change from tourney to tourney. So it's a good idea to check in advance before you show up to play.
In my experience though, the above conversion would be fine as long as you Dark Eldar-ify the hormagaunts and rippers so they don't look like you just borrowed the models from a friend's tyranid army.
The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. Bring them understanding of the power of ourselves through our strength and their fear. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all fragments will be smashed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be consumed
I have heard that most tournaments are ok as long as 50-75% of the model uses GW parts
You also must follow WYSIWYG rules
