So i have been buying my army for a few weeks now, getting stuff off ebay and i figured out i had just about enough to field a small 500 pt. foot army. I wanted to know what you all think of this start to my army and how this might do in some 500 pt. games of any type. I will be building up to hopefully 2000 with WS's,FP's, Fire Dragons, maybe a Wraithlord or two and some other things added to what i now have.
Farseer w/ singing spear and Guide 78
Dire Avengers x10
Exarch w/ power weapon and shimmershield 147
Heavy Weapon Platform w/ Scatter Laser 95
x3 War Walker w/ dual Scatter Laser 180
If you haven't fully built them yet, I think DA exarcs are on of the few infantry models in our army that would benifit from having their arms be swappable. Magnets might be hard to work out there, but you could just use something more tacky than a super glue.
Anyway you'd better better off with a power than the shimmershield at this points level. That said I run my DA as a tar unit using defend and shimmershield, so you might want to do the same eventually. They work well with melee units where the DA storm and assult to get lots of base to base contact with nasties, and then the melee unit charges in picking up a couple base to base contacts. Their squad then has to waste many attacks on the DA.
As for how it'll play that depends on a lot. If you guys use some varient of the old Combat Patrol rules where there are various limits (like nothing with front+side+rear armor higher than say 32) than your list should do fine and be fun. If you don't have any rule like that your opponent might bring some heavy armor and you're not going to be able to do anything to it.
At these points I would use Shuriken Cannons on Walkers, you will save 60 points, that is 10 points per shot lost. You will lose on some range, but at 500 I would imagine you will be playing on a 4x4. Points can be used to give your farseer fortune and spirit stones. Fortune at this level is deadly and extremely annoying. So your farseer can Guide war walkers while giving fortune to exarch who tarpits a large unit with his squad. Also, maybe it is an excess, blade storm may be good too; but that is all up to you if you can fish some points out.
I think you start needing scatter lasers at a larger games, so guardians can downgrade their heavy weapon as well.
Farseer - 118 pts
Spear, RoW, Guide, Fortune;
Dire Avengers X10; - 177 pts
Exarch - PW/SS, BS, Defend;
Guardianas X10 - 85 pts
Heavy Weapon - Shuriken Cannon;
War Walker Squadron (3) - 120 pts
6 Shuriken Cannons
same amount of bodies, slightly less daka but immensely more utility;
RoW will make sure that your spells go off, and more spells - more dead mon-keigh and more alive eldar.
Big problem I can see though, without having a transport a lot of DA advantages vanish, they quickly have to find them some melee;
Just my thoughts

Well, Whiterussian forgot the stones in the price for the farseer there, but if you are playing on a smaller table, than giving the walkers shuri cannons could be good (yo ureally wanna magnetize or pin or do something so you can mess with their armaments.) With a scout move they'll still be able to move and shoot to most places on first turn.
I dunno about the guardians with a shuri cannon though. At 24 inches they start getting really really vulnerable to small arms fire, and they don't get a scout move, so they have to move a turn before they'll be able to hit a shooty opponent playing deep.
The upgraded farseer seems a bit much for a non CC HQ at this points total, but it'd be hard to squeeze another unit in there and I'm not sure what else I'd advice.
I suppose if you keep things cheap and cheery you could work in a support weapon. An extra annoyance your opponent would have to deal with, and a D-cannon can at least threaten Land raiders. I think the new support weapon models are great. Although support weapons are far from the most popular heavy support choices at higher point totals.
Or hey you could get another walker.
@sunnyside : you are right, i messed up dem stones; but you can drop defend and RoW, to play with the points;
One unit that I would love to squese here would be a squad of dark reapers - small table and almost no tanks, makes this a great field for the exarch with tempest launcher and crack shot, alas they are too expensive - 147 points; getting another walker could be nice, and having 2 squads of 2;
I would not get the dcannon, it is way overpriced, a vibro cannon performs better, but is still too expensive; reapers are better option than either of these;
Thanks for the advice all! I have yet to add more to what i have so if i were to play a game right now i would be limited by the models i have. That being said i could adjust for my opponent taking tanks by switching the SL's on the WW to 2 with SC and 1 with BL's. Then i could switch my SL on the heavy weapon to SC Then i would be at 480. What should i do with the 20 points?
Thanks again for all your help
