I have a game coming up sometime in the near future against a BT player and I need help! I have never played against BT, and don't really know the first thing about them...
Does anyone know what popular BT armies have, and what eldar can bring to the table to counter BT? Also, if there are any useful strategies that you have found to be successful against BT that would be helpful!
Cheers, and thanks in advance for the responses!
BT isnt a very hard army from my experience to play against as an eldar;
AT: LR are hard to pop, dont bring lances, they wont work on them. But lots of melta goodness will do the trick no matter what;
CC: they are a very close-combat oriented army, they will close the distance very quick; one of the best "buffer" units I had was eldrad with melee dire avengers, with re-rolls on saves, attack reduction and an invulnerable save they did win combat, although they were fighting for 4 turns against 2 large melee squads + sword bretheren.
Try to keep the distance for as long as you can, make sure to slow down the advance of terminators, once they are out just shower them with shuriken fire, their storm shields are only 4+ invulnerable (just in case);
Actually the recent GW FAQ makes BT Assault Terminators the same as other SM factions. ie 2+/3++.
I would recommend reading the BT codex and the FAQ. Additionally it might sound cheesy but there's nothing worse than facing a tailored list. The best experience you'll have is with an all-comers list. Assume you were at a tournament.
If you don't care though and just want to make a point (against a codex older than Eldar's) then I'd recommend shuriken cannons on any tanks you have and warwalkers with EMLs.
Or if you want a challenge.. Banshees, wraithlords and starcannon vypers.
My compiled thoughts blog.
If someone posts something helpful +rep them
They get typhoon speeders and trip-lascannon preds for 20pts cheaper than usual, can get an unshakable 'fast' vindicator for not unreasonable value, tank hunting terminators with two special weapons per squad, cheap las/plas in 5 man squads, and they'll back it up with pretty mean assault terminators and competent (if not spectacular) close combat from other units (and beware the chaplains).
So where are they in trouble -
1) No psychic hoods (no psykers). Don't bother with runes of warding.
2) Lack of grenades/power fists. Your basic assault or crusader squad gets 1 attack with a fist, or none for crusader squads with lascannons. Nobody gets krak grenades as standard, most models don't get frags either. Watch out for assault marines with meltabombs though.
3) Slightly wobbly troops. They have to make an Ld test (ld8 without a marshal) any time they take a casualty. It's an Ld7 test not to shoot the closest target. 5 men in expensive rhinos or 20 (mixed 3+/4+ saves) on foot are not uncommon. Some templar lists can be vulnerable in objective games.
Honestly it's probably best not to tailor a list against them, because if you guess wrong you could put yourself in a big hole early on. Make sure you have something to deal with terminators and speeders and just play a solid list.
And do read the BT FAQ - big changes.
Thanks for the responses, lots of useful info there!Haha, I don't have the models required to make a tailored list, we are probably playing a 1500 point battle and I have around 2000 points... so not much wiggle room there!Additionally it might sound cheesy but there's nothing worse than facing a tailored list.Do you guys find that most BT use land raiders? I thought that the LRC was their bread and butter, but I could be wrong. Otherwise it seems like they are similar to the standard power armor army, which is good because the two armies I've played against the most are vanilla marines and sisters of battle. They have anything worse than D6 S8 AP1 missiles per turn can they?!?!LR are hard to pop, dont bring lances, they wont work on them. But lots of melta goodness will do the trick no matter what
Just fight them as you would any SM army, they do have their own widgets but I would not stress too much about them.
Sisters have 3 flamers with rending in a squad, works wonders for me. But sisters do lack range, exorcist being the only reliable (with the d6 shots, go figure) option.
I suppose a squad of fire dragons with ample support will help with these... How would an avatar stack up against Black Templars?LRC - yes, most used tank for them, since they can actually pack it full of melee goodness, or terminators of doom.Yes, the sisters definitely don't have many options, but the ones they do have seem to be very cost effective.Sisters have 3 flamers with rending in a squad, works wonders for me.
