Here is something I've been toying around with.
Mad Dok Grotsnick attached to a squad of burna boys, upgraded with cybork bodies placed in a battle wagon (using standard big shoota and deff rola set up).
A squad of 5++ feel no pain and "combi" power weapon/flamers sounds pretty devastating to light and heavy infantry, at least on paper.
One Scalpal short of a medpack always makes me nervous so I never use him but with this set up it could be fun.
Would this be a competitive set up worth its points? Or better left for casual games?
Mad Dok would work better with 20 Boyz in a wagon (actually 19), cause they are already devastating to light and heavy infantry, since now with Grotsnik you have 5 extra PK attacks. And Boyz are Troops.
What is more, in paper, a good idea is taking Grotsnik with a squad of Meganobz, adding Cybork Bodies, riding a Battlewagon with a Deff Rolla. They'll be something like GK Paladins (2-wounded terminators with FNP) with more attacks, but without instant death weapons. However, with S8 and S9 you will insta-kill almost everything (except MCs). If you include a warboss (or Thraka) to this list, Meganobz will be troops too (which I would suggest you do).
Hope I helped.
Seems like a decent idea, though they'll still drop like flies from small-arms fire. At the same time, they're usually pretty safe in a battle wagon, so unless they hop out the doc may make no difference. It does fit the fluff well, as burnas and meks go hand in hand. You could even toss in a few mek boyz with KMBs. Very fluffy and could add some tank-busting potential. Probably not the most point-efficient choice, but still fun and useful.
Eh.... I don't like this idea anymore. Attaching him in a squad of boys seems more interesting. I saw some lists that actually joined Grotsnik to a squad of 30 'ard boys, I'd probably drop the 'ard part (and for casual maybe even give them all cybork bodies) but is sounded interesting. Normally I wouldn't want them to foot slog, but it was hoard list and with that many models you don't have a lot of room to kite them around by exploiting the rage like ability, in theory at least.
Remember that with mad doc's rules, the battle wagon would have to move towards the nearest threat, and they'd have to disembark and assault it. His rules transfer to whatever vehicle you are in.
I find he works best as a fun unit, and usually assign him to a max size group of shoota boyz with 3 rokkit's. I give each and every boy cybork in this unit, so everyone has a 5++, and FNP. I find avy armor is all but useless in a foot slogging group, as there is far too many weapons which ignore 4+ armor. At least with the invuln, you almost always get it!
The reason for the rokkits is so the unit can not be "kited" around by a fast moving vehicle. Anything trying to kite the unit will face str 8 missiles, which lessens the chance a simple skimmer or fast transport could keep the unit unengaged most of the game.
The reasons for shoota's over slugga's, is due to the nature of doc's rule. There is many instances where you will be unable to assault a target, but be able to shoot at it. (You'll find many opponents will try to "run away" after facing this unit once).
All in all, I find the mad doc + cybork boyz large mob, becomes a massive fire magnet, allowing the rest of your army to do their job. Sometimes it crumps something really good, but generally, everyone just runs away from it, and shoots the crap outta it. And let me tell you, it takes an enormous amount of firepower to wipe out 30 boyz and mad doc, when they all have cybork and FNP.
i think it will be a good idea for the fact that they get the cybork bodies and the power weapons (the burnas) but i have never had mad dok grotsnik (we have house rules with no special characters for the sake of the new armies being way advanced. example: blood angels) but if he works like a painboy it should work out.
let em hear ya WAAAGH!!!
Or join him up with a squad of gretchin and go with robo-grots!
haha, robo grots. That would be ridiculous!
I might try out a mob of cybork shootas, that would be fun. I have a lot of shootas so all I would need is the dock. Heck I can probably convert the doc with one of the AoBR warbosses I have lying around.
Quick question, I have read the docs entry and the FAQ... but just to confirm:
If the DOC, and a unit of whatever, say shootas is in a BW. The BW has to move as fast as possible during the movement phase towards the closest enemy model (or is it infantry) right?
What if moving it as fast as possible prevents the models from disembarking and assaulting?
A little clarification for when the DOC and his unit is in a veh and out of a veh would be great thanks
Can Grotsnik board a vehicle if doing so will
get him closer to the nearest enemy than if he
A. In the spirit of the rule, if embarking in a
vehicle will not prevent him from charging that
turn and will also get him closer to the nearest
enemy than moving normally that turn, he may
do that. Once aboard, the vehicle must always
move in such a way as to move as fast as possible
towards the closest enemy and allow Grotsnik to
disembark and charge the closest enemy as soon
