Today I want to address one of our biggest weaknesses. Unfair terrain distribution.
Most armies that are considered popular or tier 1 favor mostly open terrain with high visibility and flat area terrain or ruins (difficult terrain) for cover.
We're the exact opposite. We want big cover to block LOS for our raiders, low visibility, with just enough open space to land on so we can dump nasty assault troops.
Make terrain interesting. Don't let the popular armies dictate the battlefield. Create canyons and high bridges, multiple layers where our skimmers give advantage. DE are raiders. They strike at the right moment. Choose a favorable battle ground.
Some things to remember. Per basic rule book every 40k board should have 25% of the board covered in terrain. So it's easy to cover a corner of the board in terrain then go in order back and forth and place terrain. Typically most people tend to place the cover either on their side or at the 12-14 inch mark so raiders/venoms can unload DE into cover saves. The one that that continues to bug me about terrain is RJB. If you look at the turboboosting rule it says you can't go over difficult terrain (PG 76). So as much as we like to use our 36 inch move we are often limited since terrain is plentiful.
I'm pretty sure that the one of the exceptions on pg 53 listed under "jetbikes" allows them to turbo boost over terrain: "jetbikes can move over all other models and all terrain freely."
"All I know is a door into the dark" -- The Forge, Seamus Heaney
Interestlingly that's another grey area, since technically Jetbikes are skimmers, especially Eldar ones, they theoretically move over intervening terrain freely, even if moving flat out with turbo boosters. However, P76 makes no such distinction between bikes and jetbikes, it classes the turbo boosters the same on both. I'd personally rule the way most people seem to play it, which is they are skimmers so can flit above the terrain as long as they don't land in it.
Specific rule trumps general rule typically. Quoting from page 53 of the BRB on the entry in jetbikes:
"In the movement phase jetbikes can move over all other models and all terrain freely."
It specifies in the movement phase, turbo boosting happens in the movement phase, ergo we can turboboost over terrain.
