Since a Shas'El or a Shas'O can take a bonding knife does the following scenario work?
A squad of Kroot are falling back, below 50%. A Shas'El joins them and using the bonding knife they rally next turn and capture an objective (kroot scoring).
1. Can a character join a unit falling back?
2. Does the character joining the unit let them use a bonding knife?
I know the fluff behind the bonding knife etc but this came up in a game I was watching and I am not 100% as to it's legalities.
I don't think it works, Skars. P. 48 of the BRB says that characters only count as having joined a friendly unit if they are within coherency distance at the end of the Movement Phase. A Morale check for regrouping will already have occurred by that point, and a failed Morale check will mean that the unit will already have fallen back.
Now, if you can manage to position your Independent Character such that he happens to be within 2" of a unit that is falling back at the end of the Movement phase, I think this means the IC will have joined the unit and therefore can participate in the next turn's Regrouping check.
But that is pretty risky, as in between joining the unit and being able to use the bonding knife, your opponent gets a turn, and they are likely going to be able to force more fall back moves by just moving within 6" of the unit.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Cheers for that mate, it is sort of what I figured. Not something you'd plan but it could work out and only if your mission totally depeded on it.
I had this idea some time ago but I am positive that you cannot join a unit that is falling back as per the BRB.
Page 48 right column, 6th bullet down.
"An independent character may not join or leave a unit while either he or the unit is locked in combat or falling back."
