I've used the following unit and think of modding the other 2 suits so I can have plasmas on them to.
1 broadsides leader with TL plasma/ASS/HW Multitracker/2x shielddrones
that walks with motherhen aka ethereak to gain fearless.
this unit is surprisingly durable (as long as it can claim cover atleast).
but I've been thinking about changing it to:
1 broadsides leader with TL plasma/Multitracker/2x shielddrones
2 broadsides with TL plasma/Multitracker
has anyone tried 3 broadsides with plasmas? if so against what and how did it go?
The only problem I have with plasma rifles on broadsides is that they cost points. Tau lists are cramped for points -- the army's a bit overcosted when stacked against 5e codexes -- and there always seems to be a more important place to spend those points.
I wouldn't take an Ethereal, however! You're just asking for trouble! You'd be better off taking a Shas'o with long-range weapons (missile pods, maybe plasma as well) to babysit them for morale purposes.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Yes the cost is a bitch, but its not fun to play the same list twice!
He works wonders! and if he dies Im hoirribly overrun anyhow so then it doesnt matter. the reroll morale for all my other guys + fearless broadsides works wonders. 2 coversave gundrones to take lascannon shots, and need 8+ shots to even have a shot at wounding him. And if it gets hot just move him to another unit with more bodies.
I tried taking Plasma a few times, but realized that anything that I would normally hit with Plasma, I'd rather hit with a Rail Gun anyway, so why pay the points? The SMS provides the added versatility for the horde armies as they encroach and costs no additional points.
Just my two cents from experience. But I also use Targeting Array over the A.S.S....

I like the idea of a fearless broadside team...but I don't like the idea of being tied to cover. I think the best way to go is three broadsides with ASS and a pair of shield drones. That way, you have to fail 2+/4++ twice before taking a panic test (personally, I think drones should count for the number of models in the unit, but the deaths of drones should never trigger panic tests!)

I use plasma on my leader with multi tracker, but I run A.S.S.-suits, so that explains that. I find that it is a great deterrent against deepstriking nasties. That adds 1-2 extra ap2 shots into the mix.
