Welcome to Librarium Online!
Alrighty, for a while now I've been wondering about how to change pathfinders to make them more useful. As it stands, I find them to be far to expensive for the limited utility they provide, as they are way to easy to kill and only marginally effective, especially now that the devilfish can't block line of sight to them. So, without further ado here's my idea for pathfinders 2.0
Pathfinders (Fast Attack)
Stat line as before
Team: Consists of 4-8 pathfinders
Equipment: Pulse carbine w/ markerlight
Options: As before
Character: As before
Bonding: As before
Move through cover: Pathfinders role an extra die to move through difficult terrain.
Infiltrate: As universal rule in 40k rulebook
Camoflauged Armour: Pathfinders make use of specially designed firewarrior armour, which allows them to blend in with their enviroment. They recieve a +1 bonus to coversaves.
Fleet of foot: Pathfinders are used in a scouting role and as such must be able to move quickly to a new firing position when their old one is compromised. Pathfinders may elect to move a d6 extra inches in the shooting phase, but they may not fire any weapons if they do so.
Rail Rifles: As in chapter approved.
I'm not sure on a good points cost for these guys, and that's one of the main reasons I'm posting this. Constructive suggestions are absolutely welcome, what do you guys think? Are pathfinders good the way the are, is my idea good, is there some other way?
i like the idea but they'd have to be quite expensive. it definitely makes them more fast attack
less hate more kittens
Gonna need to be a bit pricey, I like the ability to be able to make a move before the game starts but the infiltration makes more sense.

I like the fleet of foot bit. Sorta fits with the forward position they're supposed to have. Ducking in and out of cover. Think the cover save bonus would be a bit over the top though...

that's be the day! Tau with FoF!
no seriously, i like everything *except* for the FoF.
you think those short squatty lil hoofed foot Tau are gonna move as fast as Eldar?
+1 cover save? sure it wouldn't bother me.
infiltrate, sure why not.
i'd also like to see "Veteran Fire Warriors" basically 13 point BS 4 Ld 8 Infiltrating FWs.
We could probably drop the fleet of foot if people are opposed to it, the reason I put it in was that it seemed to fit with the opening story in the tau codex where they've already moved on by the time the guardsmen bring their weapons to bear on their old location. So, assuming we dropped that, what do you think would be appropriate points cost?
With the new shooting rules the pulse carbine is fairly worthless. I would prefer them to have pulse rifles. What they should do is make the pulse carbine an assault 2 weapon, or perhaps let them re-roll their to hit roll.
Giving them Fleet of foot would be nice, and make them more fast attack like, but I don’t think Tau have it in them to sprint.
I like the extra D6 when moving threw terrain. Their not moving as fast as someone with fleet of foot, but their good at moving threw rough terrain.
+1 Cover save might be a bit much, and I think the point increase would have to be a bit high.
The idea for the +1 cover save is an obvious nodd to the eldar rangers, and I think it makes sense for our sort of equivalent "sniper" unit if you will. What do you guys say to 18-20 points per model?
I would say around 15, 16 pts each. On a side note, wouldn't the fleet of foot and move through cover make the devilifish pointless and destroy the tau image of a proud martial race (as in they prefer to stand and shoot down the enemy, rather then sneak around in bushes and get caught in dishonourable close combat). Or have I missed something here?
Apathy is the greatest enemy of all.
I don't think so. My idea in doing this was to get rid of the devilfish, it doesn't help the pathfinders at all to my mind. And in the fluff there's nothing that says you can't be sneaky and use cover and such to your advantage, just look at the stealth suits.Originally posted by NightFox@Oct 15 2004, 109
