Welcome to Librarium Online!
Can we be somewhat competitive, and how would you go about specific tasks like adequate synapsis coverage, and handling armor. How would you make a list at say 2000 points. Would you have two squads of hive guard and one of zoans or the other way round. What about troops, lots of warriors or more of the smaller guys. The more i think of it the more i like it, just always thought you "had" to use MCs. By the way sorry for the lack of questions marks, damn key doesnt work.
Running Nids without MC is like running terminators with no Armour save. It is not taking full advantage of what we have to offer.
It CAN be done, but it really isn't successful. UNLESS you have a list built purley based on not running MC, so it is no basic list you would expect to see. I would be looking at:
About 50 Toxin Hormagaunts
three Tyranid Primes
6 Hive Guard
3 Thropes in a spore
About 9 biovores
That would be what I would go for, any leftover points invest into termagaunts.

No, it cannot be done. Back when the codex was first released, I thought that it might be viable.
Now that more 5e codexes have been released -- codexes that exploit the full range of the 5th edition 40K rules set -- definitely not.
Tyranids are rapidly weakening, and the FAQ and force org limitations of the army are becoming massive anchors to competitiveness. The number of builds that I think can be made competitively viable are shrinking down to a bare few. And all of them require 2-3 Tervigons and 2-3 Tyrannofexes at a minimum. Them's the breaks these days.
The codex now only barely qualifies as "good". Sigh. If only that blankety-blank FAQ would disappear, for a start, at least....
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

To the OP, the only list Ive ever found remotly succesful was spamming warrior sized units. Id never even consider it for competitive play, but against non tournament builds you can have the occasional good game. Its basically an isntant loss against Guard and knights though, and a real struggle if the enemy has a lot of S8 (Dark eldar.)

I put up a thread @ http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ml#post1849369 for us to discuss list ideas for a build related to this topic.
