so i have been kind of looking around and am wondering how people play the trueborn sniper squad. Do they take a turn to set it up or are they firing first turn? Where do you deploy them and why? Which weapons do you think are best and why?
Well as far as the setup, the actual trueborn "sniper" squad has only one real weapon loadout, 3 trueborn with 2 dark lances with (usually) a dual cannon venom. I think that their set up each game really depends on the deployment that has been rolled for the game.
In anything but Dawn of War you want them in a position where they can be firing from first turn. I put stuff like sniper squads at the top of ruins with multiple levels to give the squad a cover save and make it hard to get to them in assault. The Venom then just acts as an anti-infantry support platform. In Dawn of War you dont have the option of having your trueborn deployed at the start, this is where the venom comes in handy so you can get them into position as fast as possible so you dont waste any more shooting turns than necessary.
I agree with most of that. The only thing I don't do the same is the venom. If I get DoW I'm usually in a really good position anyway so I don't mind if they footslog. With movement and running (they can't shoot anyway) I can usually get them into effective area terrain.
The best part of this squad is how small it is. I have so many bigger threats that this small stationary squad almost always survives until the end.
The trick is to deploy them well. You want them to be able to cover objectives or probable routes of your opponent. You don't want them to be within 24" of these things however. Keep them completely inconvenient and out of the way so that if someone does want to kill them they'll have to specifically devote resources to it.
