Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have been thinking for a while about trying to play some 40K - I have watched battles for years and have a bit of an idea of how it works, but have never actually read the rules so am not sure what sort of units are strong (especially when it comes to piercing through enemy armour, which seems to be completely different in 40K to fantasy) and whether there are some to be avoided.
Anyway, I have always quite enjoyed reading tyranid battle reports and they seem to be a respectable codex, plus I think I could paint their models ok, so I am thinking they will be my first force but I am not quite sure where to start in terms of building a basic army.
So basically what do I need my army to be made up of, and out of those what sort of unit choice are most useful to take and how best do I equip them?
Also, if it is any help, alot of the players at the local games workshop seem to take armies with tons of tanks and various vehicles, I think they play 1500-2000 point games, does that sound normal?
Oh, also, I spotted these models on e bay - are any of them worthwhile?
Includes: Old One Eye
2 Tyrants (1 current 1 collectors)
1 Tyrant Guard
1 Biovore + 10 spore mines
4 Ripper Swarms
30+ Gaunts (Including Hive Node)
1 Brood Lord
1 set of Tree Terrain
+ 100's of spare parts including weapons, biomorphs and body parts (Ideal for conversions!)
That might be a good start on a run-down for the units/biomorphs etc.
For the models, consider looking at:
Say 10 stealers and a Broodlord, all of the gaunts you can get your hands on, the zonethropes are nice and useful in most army lists, and a tyrant would also set you up.
I strongly suggest use proxies units until you have your army list so you aren't throwing money left right and center, good luck!

Welcome to the Swarm!!
IE Trygons are strong and all....but one on it's own with no support is fairly easy to kill. Same goes for almost everything else.Guns....you need guns. And not just fleshborers and the like. Heavy weapons to bust open vehicles. Tyranids are great up close, but they suffer at range and cracking open armor so you will need to bring plenty of the long-range heavy weapons. Heavy-Venom Cannons, Impaler Cannons, Rupture Cannons, Brain-leech devourers and the like are all decent are messing up light to medium armor. So basically what do I need my army to be made up of, and out of those what sort of unit choice are most useful to take and how best do I equip them?
Use the guns to crack open transports so your CC critters can eat the squishy guys inside and don't waste their time trying to claw through a vehicle.Yeah, this is pretty common. I also play Imperial Guard and at 1500 points I field about 10-12 vehicles. This is why it's so important to have a way to bust open vehicles at range or they will just play keep-away from your army all game or tank shock you where ever they want you to move. Also, if it is any help, alot of the players at the local games workshop seem to take armies with tons of tanks and various vehicles, I think they play 1500-2000 point games, does that sound normal?
Tyrant is a good HQ when equipped correctly. If they don't have wings, they will want 1 or 2 tyrant guard to help them survive.2 Tyrants (1 current 1 collectors)Carnies took a hit in this edition. There are only two builds I think would work for them. All Devourers or all sycthing talons (maybe with bio-plasma).4 CarnifexIF you have a walking Tyrant, hell yes.1 Tyrant GuardI don't like them, but there are people here who make good use of them.1 Biovore + 10 spore minesDitto on these.1 RavenerIf you get these I highly suggest converting up or scratch-building a Mycetic Spore to go along with them.2 ZonethropeNo, just...no.4 Ripper SwarmsWhat kind of gaunts?30+ Gaunts (Including Hive Node)Don't need that many. Maybe 8-12 + a brood lord at the most.30+ GenestealersCan work very well, depends on how they are equipped and what the rest of the army looks like.7 WarriorsIf you take stealers, hell yes.1 Brood Lord8 of them won't do jack. You'll want at least 20 of them. I like these guys a lot as distractions and screens. One of my tournament list uses nearly 40 of them.8 Gargoyles
