I am new to tau and have kind of put things on hold a bit in the hopes that a new codex will come out in the next 6 months. One question I had was about load-out variation. It seems to me so many people are running very similar lists. Most of the suits are Fireknife with a Deathrain from time to time. FW's are taken at minimum and stuffed in a Devilfish... Stealth unit is generally seen as too pricy for a unit that does the same thing that everything else can do better. My point being a lot of tau armies out there lack much personality. People have found what works and what doesn't and that is what gets played.
Do you guys think the new codex with change this much? I have read the rumors about what to possibly expect, and although lots of the fixes are great and I suppose the HQ unlocking troop thing could do this... it still seems like tau will fall back into their old ways of having 1 or 2 load-outs that work far better than any others. You look at a new codex like DE and they seem to have nearly endless possible lists that could work in some fashion or another... I would like to see tau have a bit more variation.
What do you guys think?
Every codex gets better when it gets updated, unless your Chaos Space Marines . Of course it'll change quite a bit. I think the units we've got will pretty much stay the same but hopefully the new units that we get, if any, will bring some character to the codex.
One shall stand, and one shall fall.
I think the unit choices and amounts will not change, although previously unviable options will become viable and so will replace other choices. If stealth suits can choose their weapon, then sure, a unit will make it into my army every every time, if vespids get a 4+ and at least 24" weapons and a 3 or so point reduction then they'll happily replace a piranha.
But currently the Tau are a cookie-cutter army (to a point), and it is up to you to make your list individual. I use vespids and Shadowsun, and my list is still effective.
As for the new codex, here's hoping for BS4!

The real problem is that they fill the same slot as a crisis team, and you really need three of those. Secondarilly, even if you had a slot, points are hard to scrape together for something that doesn't murder MEQs or pop transports very well.
