I've been looking through, and just haven't found any hellion heavy lists. I've been wondering if anyone has tried to create one yet... like what you'd see if the Baron was to Really lead an onslaught against an opposing kabal or something of the sort.
What would anyone think you'd find if you played such a themed list? say at 2000 pts? I've been thinking it may be based around wwp's or a lot of reserves....
I look forward to everyone's opinions. mind you, I'm not looking for full out lists, just the various things you'd expect to see in that type of list.
The problem with a hellion list, from a fluff view point anyway, is that there wouldn't be anything in it except hellions. The baron doesn't have his own kabal, he just leads the hellions, so if he were to attack a kabal that's all he could bring unless he allied himself with that kabals enemies. which would be a normal list with a few squads of hellions in it.
Making a kabal/cult/coven list is easy as all 3 have at least 1 unit for each section of the force organisation chart. a hellion army only really has 1 choice and a HQ neither of which can deal with armour/transports. So while a hybrid kabal/cult/coven and hellion list could work the hellions themselves would be more of a supporting unit than the core of the army
The Baron actually leads what's left of the Kabal of the Slashed Eye, after getting his revenge.
Mostly hellions, but there are a few squads of kabalite warriors floating around. I assume they fight from Raiders.
I'm going to say its "doable", it just avoided since many believe Hellions are expensive for such fragile choices. However, with the right kind of support, you'll do just fine ... should anyway.
Just like Wych lists, your support comes from the FA and HS slots. They, of course, need some anti-vehicle/dread ability.
For your FA, naturally, I'd go for Reaver squads with heat lances. I don't go more than four models, but, may force is quite different from a HH list
As for your HS, you're choosing from the Ravager, the Razorwing, and the Voidraven. I'd personally go for 2 Ravagers, and either a RJ or VB depending on my opponent ( if I new ahead of time ).
That's a start. I'll tune back in if I think/find something else ...
I like the mojo your thinking for a hellion list. It was my same kind of thought as a wych list, and when you do point comparisons, its about the same points for around 10-12 hellions as it is a squad of wyches in a raider.options varying of course... I've always favored my AT out of my HS and warriors/TB. thought about trying it with reavers, but they are too fragile for my taste for AT, as for harrasers, they are great.
Ive been thinkin of maybe even tieing in the duke for his added support to the army, but downside to that, i cant squeeze in any wwp's for those DoW scenarios.... :-/ but then again, i dont really get too much issue with reserves.
I didnt realize he was from that Kabal either....i'll have to read up on that.
In a very strange way, the Baron and the Duke work well together. This is primarily because the Baron allows you to roll 2 die for combat drugs. All Hellions have combat drugs and that can make a huuuuuuge difference. Scourges can be used as your anti tank support, as they are mercenaries, and the Baron is likely to have plenty of cash.

Stab it, slash it, bite, tank shock and smash it. If that fails, shoot it.
I think hellions are very good this edition, a simple 10 man squad can generate 20 poisoned shots, 27 str4 hits and 4 agoniser hits on the charge, all for the tidy sum of 185 points.
Pretty neat if you ask me, on top of this, they get fleet of foot, meaning a possible 24" charge, ok we would love to have the shooting on the charge but in some circumstances this may not be possible.
Hellions main weakness is their armour and this is where my opinion of them being a counter attack unit comes from. If you intend on using hellions as an assault force then you are playing them wrong, granted this could be done in a WWP situation, as with the WWP placement and their speed gurantees them to be in great forward positions.
In a typical battle however trying to get them to combat places them in the open almost all the time, cover is of great importance to them, they really need a unit to compliment them, for example warriors, warriors can take advantage of raiders, venoms and all their ranged weapons to force the enemy to come out and play.
As a WWP army i would get 4 x (10-12 man squads)
take the baron place him in a squad
def 2-3 talos
WWP delivery system 2 x (4 wracks, heamy WWP and venom)
then as much anti tank as you can find.
I think this would make a very good basis to a WWP army for a tourny, you could realistically take 6 squads, but you still need the elusive anti tank, for dreads and landraiders mainly.
hellions can handle rear av10 tanks, yes glancing is the best you can get but at least if you get a few imobilises it won't blow in your face and will simply be a wreck, which is not typically difficult to do, also all you need is too stun rhinos and block the hatches, which is really achievable, there's a tank full of stuck marines. in a WWP list you could probably dictate the battle, not something i have tried but thinking about it now, its seems very plausible.

If you're always worried about crushing the ants beneath you...you won't be able to walk.
I'd check out this blog if you haven't already. He makes use of a big hellion unit and some pain token tricks to pretty good effect.
Delusions of Grandeur
I was playing around and made this 2000 list which is even more hellion heavy, not as "competitive" but probably pretty fun to use. If I had 50 Hellions sitting around I'd probably give it a whirl.
3 x Haemies w/liquifiers
20 hellions w/helliarch
15 hellions w/helliarch, phantasm
15 hellions w/helliarch, phantasm
6 reavers w/2 HL
6 reavers w/2 HL
6 reavers w/2 HL
3 x ravagers w/FF
You can use pain token tricks to give the big unit FC to smash apart parking lots, especially if you get +1 S drugs lol. The haemies and wracks dish out their pain tokens then camp an objective, dropping 3 liquifiers on anyone who gets close.
The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. Bring them understanding of the power of ourselves through our strength and their fear. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all fragments will be smashed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be consumed
at this moment im in the proxy stage of a hellion-styled list... and the initial units i know i want to take with them is scourges, beasts, 2 ravagers, a jetfighter, debating on how many overall squads of hellions to take, cause of need for terrain aka raiders with either wyches or warriors... For a tourny style list id take the 2-3 haemys for wwp deployment, but to help work out bugs and potential issues, i was thinking of replacing those with the duke. I have 11 reavers to toss into the mix, grant it they are the old ones, but hey... as for my scourges setup, i was thinking a squad of 10 for potentially 4 HwB for anti tank. for elites i was thinking of a few options, harlies, since i have the minis, incubi...possibly in a venom, for delivery, and/or TB in a venom....I figuring potentially 2+ venoms for infantry control, but the hellions and maybe scourges should help with that after they are done playing with the tanks.
.....There seems to be alot of quirkiness to work out this concert to make it coexist properly.... but i know once it does, it should be a NICE niche army to play with.
