Welcome to Librarium Online!
My favourite unit, now featuring in this week's Unit of the Week.
How do you field them? Do you give them anything? How many broods? How many in your broods?
Personally I love to have two groups of 20 running around with Toxin Sacs absolutely wrecking everything infantry.
"The Hormagaunts claw your face off!" -- an Imperial Guardsmen from Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2: Retribution.
Whilst I tend to specialise my Nids depending on what I feel like playing at the time, I tend to run my Horm's the same each time. The Sacs allow them to tear through infantry, but I don't usually bother upgrading them at all and go instead with sheer numbers. Sure, it may mean I get 1-2 less kills in a single turn of combat, but the extra numbers mean that any losses will lead to less of a decline in effectiveness in following turns.
Not only that, but it's great fun to run a couple of units of 20 straight into an enemy unit you really don't want shooting at you as it'll tie them up for a couple of turns whilst the rest of the fleet gets closer. I tend to use 2 units of 20, usually backed up with a Tervigon and a couple of units of Termagants. Giving the opponent so many things at once to shoot at is always good and it's great fun watching your opponent fret as they kill one unit just to get jumped on by another in the following turn.
I usually run a squad of ~20 every game. I usually put AG and TS on them so they are effective against both infantry and lots of vehicles. Last game I played against an armored company I multi assaulted two russ tanks and destroyed both of them by piling up glances. Lucky yes, but they tend to surprise people with the S4 charge. They can be a bit of a point sink with both upgrades so when I can I keep a tervigon close so I can give them feel no pain.
They are usually very successful throughout the game as long as they stay in cover. The other thing is charging through cover is usually a very bad idea unless your facing something like tau. Damn gw taking away flesh hooks. One game a foot guard spent his entire turn shooting at a group of 20 in cover with fnp. Between the two saves he killed 2 and then had them eat 2 squads and a command squad in the next two turns. On the other hand they got eaten alive after charging a group of berserkers when they didnt have fnp. Great unit, but like every thing else nids they are very fragile and situational.
